L ets go back to the beginning. At the start of this book, I asked you to state your vision for the world, the positive change you hope to make in your home, community, workplace, or even your nation. This vision is the reason you want to be an influencer in the first place. Take a moment to review that positive change. Call it to mind. Literally envision it. What will the world look like when you succeed in influencing others to change? Its an inspiring picture, isnt it?
Yet it is not without challenges. By now youve realized that achieving this vision will not be easy. Perhaps it seems too big for you to tackle. You may be wondering, What have I gotten myself into? If so, youre not alone. Everyone who envisions a better world faces that moment of apprehension, and thats the way it should be. If your vision seems within easy reach, its too small to be worthy of your commitment and sacrifice. Every worthwhile dream seems a bit terrifying at the start. But take courage. You can do this. You can influence the world. The leap from where you are now to your vision for the future may seem great, but you can bridge the gap.
Remember that influencing others is a long game. This is a marathon, not a sprint. It will take months or even years to draw others toward your positive vision. And remember that your influence begins within yourself. If you hope to influence others, you must first gain control of yourselfyour thoughts, attitudes, and actions. If you dont know where to begin, start there. You must become the change you hope to see in the world.
Next you will influence others through your vision, thoughts, words, habits, presence, encouragement, and generosityand through the compelling power of your commitment and sacrifice. If you are diligent, your influence will not stop there. Through those with whom you come into contact, your vision will ripple outward, affecting more and more people over time. Ultimately, you will change the world.
Impossible? No. This result is entirely possible if you are able to harness the incredible power of your influence. Remember, you are influencing others all the time, whether you are aware of it or not. And that influence is never neutral. You constantly affect others in either negative or positive ways. When you are able to seize that power and harness it to further your vision, nothing can stop you from achieving your goal.
I believe in you! I am convinced you have what it takes to gain mastery of yourself, influence others, and impact the world. Only one question remains for you to answer: When will you begin?

RALPH WALDO EMERSON
Y ouve heard it said, Theres one in every crowd. Most of the time when that well-worn descriptor of human behavior is used, its not good news. It is often applied to someone who stands out because of their negative impact on others. Theres one in every crowd could be applied to the person who always speaks their mind while others stare at the floor or the sky. It could refer to that one person who forgets to turn off their cell phone at church or who drives slow in the passing lane. It might be said of that one guy who yells Get in the hole! at a golf tournament, before the golfer has even taken a swing. It seems that in every place people gather, theres one ill-mannered, boorish, or obnoxious person. Weve all experienced the negative power of that one person among many. If were honest, we would probably admit that weve been that person on some occasions. The saying Theres one in every crowd usually refers to negative influence, the power we all have to affect others in destructive ways.
