Acknowledgments
You would think that this would be an easier part of the book to write, but I am finding it one of the most difficult. When I sat down and actually began to consider the amount of support, love, time, patience, energy and reflection from the countless people in my life from all the periods of my life that influenced this work, it is a bit overwhelming. Where do you start and how do you convey something like this in words?
This book is really the synthesis of everything I have been learning from multiple disciplines over the past 15 years (give or take). So, with deep gratitude, I first want to thank all of the teachers, mentors, friends, family, students, clients, & colleagues that taught me, challenged me and supported me Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
Specific thanks and gratitude
My best friend and life partner, Erika Patterson. Without you this wouldnt have happened. You supported me, encouraged me and believed in this project when I was skeptical, frustrated, and discouraged.
To my parents, Debbie Kramer and Jim Tarrant, thank you for expressing interest and being proud. It meant a lot and helped keep me motivated. To my kids, Morgan Patterson and Jacob Tarrant, thank you for keeping me grounded. Whenever my ego would get too involved and I would become too absorbed, you were perfect reminders of what really matters.
To my meditation, qigong, and spiritual teachers (in no particular order), Grandmother Aya, Seido Ronci, Ginny Morgan, Arthur Du, Kenny Greene, Greg McDonald, Ken Cohen, Master Glenn Mendoza, Tom Williams, & Rainbow Eagle, thank you for helping me explore my internal world, connect to something greater, and appreciate the Mystery. Thank you also for helping me learn something of Shamanism, Zen, Vipassana, Taoism, Qigong, Taiji Chuan, Energy Healing, Arhatic Yoga, Kabbalah, and Native American Spirituality.
To my good friend Debi Elliott for facilitating my exploration of consciousness, introducing me to new ideas, encouraging me in this journey and adding a creative flair that has hopefully rubbed off (at least a little).
Thank you to the University of Missouri. I received all of my degrees at Mizzou and worked there in a number of roles. The time I spent working at the Student Health Center with Terry Wilson was particularly important as this experience refined my thinking of many of the concepts in this book and provided a format to teach mindfulness-based practices to the University community. The essence of NeuroMeditation was born at MU.
While all of my students certainly played a role in my education, certain students helped me grow in profound ways. Thank you Molly Menster, Brett Woods, Anna Watermelon, Meghan Keeler, Miranda Walker and Chris Shannon.
Thank you to the neurofeedback community that introduced me to the idea of exploring states of consciousness with technology. Big thanks to all the folks at BrainMaster Technologies and Stress Therapy Solutions. Thank you to Richard Soutar for introducing me to the concept of neuromeditation.
Thank you to all the students that have attended my workshops. Your attention, comments, feedback, and questions help me clarify and refine my thinking, making the NeuroMeditation program much richer than it would have been otherwise.
Finally, big thanks to the folks at PESI who have sponsored my workshops and published this work. Special thanks to my Acquisitions Editor, Karsyn Morse and Editor, Donald Altman for providing guidance, edits, suggestions, corrections, and clarity. Thanks to Amy Rubenzer for her expert book design and making the brain images work.
