Introduction
Life is hard. It seems that regardless of how good things might work out on occasion, the challenges of life just keep coming at you, dont they? Each and every new day brings new struggles and new difficulties. And they keep coming. They dont let up. They just keep coming at what, sometimes, feels like an unbearable pace. Bills to pay, issues with our kids, health problems, marriage issues to resolve, the stresses of work. You know the challengesrough seas to navigate even when everything is going welleven when we make all the right decisions. But lifes challenges get much, much harder when we make bad decisions. Bad decisions are painful. And they usually cost a lot of money and often alter the course of our lives.
I see people every dayand Im sure you see them toopeople who, in spite of their best attempts to navigate lifes difficult waters, make very bad decisions. Poor, unwise and foolish decisions. And in doing so, they needlessly complicate their lives, cost themselves money and cause themselves and those they love pain. These foolish decisions make life profoundly more difficult and complicated than it needs to be.
Unwise decisions. I see them over and over in the lives of others. I see them in my own life. If you are honest, you see them in yours, too.
Its evident that we as a societyand all of us as individualsneed wisdom. Real wisdom. Not trite snippets or catchy sound bites. Not quick fixes from the chattering class on cable news shows. Not self-help from this weeks hottest conference speaker. Not talk show blather. We need true wisdom. The kind that helps us make really good, quality decisions that can spare us pain and heartache. Money-saving, life-improving decisions.
We dont seem to hear much about wisdom in our society today. And unless you consciously try to seek them out, you run into very few, truly wise people these days. Wisdom is not a common trait found among the masses. This is because wisdom is not easy to come by. It is not easy to acquire. It takes both effort and diligence. In order to acquire wisdom, one must be intentional about it.
But there is a man in history who had much to say on the subject, and if you are willing to listen, he left a treasure that still speaks powerfully to you and me today. He is a man of the ages who offers advice and help for our lives. He wasnt perfect, and he did make mistakes, but his wisdom was profound and widely recognized. In fact, he is known in history as the wisest man who has ever lived. He is King Solomon of ancient Israel. He is a fascinating man who has much to say, and if youll consider what he has to say, it could change your life.
Change your life? Really? Thats a grandiose claim. We hear that phrase thrown around a lot, but nevertheless, it is true. What Solomon left us could change your life. Intrigued? Then keep reading.
So, who was King Solomon and what made him so wise? He was the second son of King David and his wife Bathshebayes that Bathshebathe other woman and the central figure involved in King Davids greatest moral failure and most embarrassing political scandal. When his father David was aging, Solomon ascended the throne of ancient Israel. The year was roughly 950 b.c.
Israels King Solomon is described in the Bible by his two most notable traits: his wisdom and his wealth. In fact, he was far richer than all the kings of the ancient worldliterally the richest man of his day. Even by todays standards, where barons and billionaires circle the globe in private jets and custom yachts, Solomons wealth was impressive.
The revenue from trading that flowed through his hands over the span of his reign has been estimated at between $40 billion and one trillion. This figure doesnt include what he received in domestic taxes, or what he received from his father David as an inheritance. In practical terms, he had more than he knew what to do with, evidenced by the fact that all of King Solomons personal household items such as goblets and table settings were pure gold. Silver, in fact was so plentiful in Jerusalem during his reign as to be considered of little value. King Solomon was wealthier than all the other kings of other nations before him. And none of Israels kings after him were his equalfinancially, or politically.
