Welcome to Mindfulness Meditation 101.
So, youve found yourself in the self-help section again, have you? Maybe one of your friends told you how meditation has changed their life and insisted that you do some research. Or youve heard that meditation is something thats become a little more trendy over the last couple of years. The hipsters are throwing the word around like its a hot potato and youve caught it. Whats the harm in seeing what its all about?
You might be asking yourself why you even bothered to pick up this book. You might be telling yourself that you dont have time for this or that its all a bunch of hogwash. Well, first let me tell you that youre making excuses and its not hogwash. Theres actually a lot of science to back mindfulness and what it can do for you, but well get to all of that nitty-gritty stuff later in this book.
If youre feeling like your current lifestyle isnt working for you. Perhaps youre also feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, or maybe you just want to start being a little more present in your everyday life. Making use of this book is the first step in the right direction. Good job!
Before you think that reading this book is all youre going to have to do, let me be straight with you. This book is not going to be your quick fix solution. Youre not going to finish reading this book and be a changed person. However, this book will give you the tools to start making those important changes to better your current mindset and lifestyle. Reading this book is just the first step. The rest of the work is going to have to come from you.
So, ask yourself if youre willing to do the work. Accepting that the way youre living certain aspects of your life the wrong way can be a bit of a bruise to the ego, but youll be fine. I promise. Youre willing to actively make some changes, so give yourself a pat on the back (figuratively though, dont do that in public because you might get a couple of raised eyebrows in your direction).
What To Expect
Now that you know theres going to be a little work involved, lets get into what this book is going to cover and how it's all related to mindfulness.
Believe it or not, there is more than one way to be mindful. It doesn't simply consist of sitting on a mountaintop with your legs crossed, your hands resting on your knees, and feeling one with the universe (thats more like meditation and well get to that later in this book too). In order to be mindful, you need to bring it into every aspect of your life, not just sitting on the mountaintop.
Throughout this book, youll be asked to look at things like your sleeping habits and how it may be affecting your current mindset. Having a good night's rest is vital. When we sleep, our bodies recover from the days hard work, our brains sieve through all the information weve taken in that day, tosses out whatever we dont need, and files away all of the important things. Our body does most of its healing and growing when we sleep. So, to put it simply, making sure that youre getting enough sleep is one of the keys to living a healthy lifestyle.
Another aspect of your life this book will cover is your social life. The people that you surround yourself with are capable of affecting your state of mind. So, if you have friends, a partner, or family members that tend to push boundaries and make you feel anxious, then it's important that you have a look at those relationships and re-evaluate them. Perhaps all it takes is reinforcing boundaries and saying no. Or maybe itll take something more final like leaving them behind in order for you to take a healthy step forward.
Making changes isnt easy. Whoever told you that it was going to be, lied. Change can also bring about anxiety, and this book will give you the tools to deal with these feelings and help you process them. Two of the main skills this book will cover is breathing and meditation. You might be thinking that you already know how to breathe, and you do it all the time so theres nothing new for you to learn. Well, let me tell you that while you might be breathing all the time, there are ways in which breathing can assist with anxiety that you might not know about.
Meditation also plays a big part in achieving mindfulness. In fact, if theres anything you take away from this book, it should be the importance of practicing mindful meditation. Youve probably noticed that meditation has been picked up as a global trend. There are tons of apps online that have guided meditations, meditations for beginners, and the list goes on. However, before meditating there are probably a few things that you need to know. Meditation isnt just about sitting down, closing your eyes, and clearing your mind. If thats what youre being told, then itll seem virtually impossible. This book is going to give you a beginner's break down for practicing meditation that will have you on the right track to achieving mindfulness.
This book is also going to cover the importance of stepping outside once in a while and getting some fresh air. Now, before you start to panic, youre not going to be asked to frolic naked outside while doing a rain dance. This isnt that kind of book. However, youll understand how the simple act of walking around the block, without the distraction of a cell phone, can be a very mindful experience.
Being active and moving your body is one of the keys to a healthy mind. No, this book is not the ultimate guide to fitness and shredded abs. You will not be expected to run marathons or become a gymnast. Having said that, this book will explain how and why talking the occasional stroll through your neighborhood park or getting together with some friends to go for a hike, is enormously beneficial towards a healthy mindset. Apart from the very necessary vitamin D that were able to soak up from the sun, there is a decent amount of evidence that proves that being outdoors and reconnecting with nature is able to assist with stress and anxiety.
What we put into our bodies is also just as important as what we do with them. Its very common for people to have negative relationships with food, especially women. Its not unknown that fashion and the media have created an unhealthy expectation for society when it comes to what their bodies should look like. Then social media came along and made that expectation even more unrealistic. The truth of the matter is, our bodies arent perfect, cinching our waists and eradicating cellulite is not going to change that. People need to be able to look at their bodies and love them for the way that they are, not for what they arent. Unfortunately, the constant exposure to social media and altered photos doesnt help when it comes to self-love and acceptance. This isnt one of those books thats going to preach eating broccoli and dry chicken breast. However, this book will highlight that a healthy body does really lead to a healthy mind.
