To the many meditation teachers who have helped so many seeking peace. To the scientists taking knowledge of meditation to a new level. Much gratitude .
CONTENTS
Dear Reader,
I first met Denise Dempsey via video chat when she was sitting outside of a bungalow in Hawaii, where she had traveled to teach a meditation workshop. The sky glimmered and the palm trees swayed, but Denise wasnt interested in paradise. Centered and present, she wanted to get to business, distilling her knowledge around mindfulness into 100 meditations that could help people manage the stress, both large and small, impeding their life.
Do a quick internet search and you will find thousands of resources on mindfulness, meditation, and the secrets to being present. Many of them are helpful; few are transformative. What makes Denise stand out is her refusal to offer quick fixes and lofty promises. Her commitment is to the hard work of mindfulness. Her duty is to the reader, whom she is able to meet exactly where they are. The result is a thoughtful and accessible path to meditation by someone who has known fear and heartbreak, who has overcome hardship and transformed it into a gift to guide others.
There are many ways to incorporate mindfulness practices into your life. Whats certain is that no matter what stage you are on in your journey, no matter what type of stress brought you here, Denise will meet you with compassion, diligence, and support. I hope you get the same comfort and inspiration from her words as I do.
One breath at a time,
Erin C. Nelson

This book exists at a time when meditation is no longer a fringe practice. Scientific research has paved the way for its entry into healthcare, in a way measuring wisdom thats been there all along. We now have access to a multitude of resourcesmeditation apps, guided meditation recordings, and books. Yet amid this need for support, many also desire greater simplicity where one does not have to rely on apps or recordings. Its in this context that I offer a different kind of meditation book.
What you have here is a special selection of meditations that can be used to help you manage stress. Whether your stress is high or low, acute or chronic, this book offers ways to peacefully tend to your needs. Regardless of the time of day, whether you have a surplus or lack of time, youll find meditations here that address a variety of needs. As youll discover, mindfulness practice becomes more familiar as you go. When there are challenges, there are also ways to address those challenges.
In my thirties, I was introduced to mindfulness meditation in a way that was simple and practical. This was through the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, founded in 1979 by the father of mindfulness in the mainstream, Jon Kabat-Zinn. The MBSR program and mindfulness became a core component of behavioral medicine when researchers began to rely on them to study how contemplative practice could benefit mind-body health. Through experience, I have learned that the practice doesnt need to be complicated, difficult, or time-consuming.
Meditation has brought ease into my lifea growing acceptance of myself, my moods, and my body. It has helped me manage several health issues, including the diagnosis of a brain tumor, which, I was told, would probably not kill me but I would have to learn to live with it nonetheless. Mindfulness meditation ultimately quieted the noise of that stress. My performance at work also improved. There seemed to be more time, even though nothing had tangibly changed. Using other methods, I had been meditating since my teens, but this was a new beginning.
Since becoming an MBSR teacher in 2003, Ive taught thousands of students while working within multiple healthcare systems and for the US Department of Veteran Affairs. People sign up for the classes I teach because theyre experiencing symptoms that all relate, in some way, to stress. These students want to feel better. They often report later that, like me, they found that the skills they developed remained useful long after they addressed the initial problem. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, the ancient philosopher Lao Tzu said. This book is here to support you on your path.
When we experience chronic stress, sometimes even our best go-to strategies dont seem to help anymore, and we benefit from new ones. The 100 mindfulness meditations you have in this book cover everything from everyday stresslike dealing with traffic or situations at workto the stress of chronic health conditions. These meditations can help you take care of your body when youre feeling stressed. They can also increase your resilience to stress so that it takes less of a toll.
