Foreword

My hotel room is haunted! I have to get out of there.

Those were the first words Lisa Campion spoke to me, awakening in me a sisterly bond and an urgency to help her.

She cant stay there , I thought.

Theres an extra bed in my roomyoure welcome to it, I said, looking into the wide brown eyes of my brand-new friend.

Lisa and I had been invited to be speakers at a summertime womens weekend retreat on a lake in Massachusetts, led by our mutual friend and colleague Wendy Capland. Amid the CEOs in swimsuits, shorts, and flip-flops; the tables of watermelon slices; and the coconut scent of Coppertone wafting in the air, I talked about the power of dreams and the heros (aka Sheros) journey, and Lisa shared energy healing techniques with the women who run corporate America on the East Coast.

As she and I were packing up after the days events, with still another day of the retreat ahead of us, I asked her, Do you need company extracting your belongings from that haunted hotel?volunteering myself to be her wingwoman.

That would be great! She seemed to sigh with relief.

The next thing I knew, we were Thelma and Louise, speeding through the dark, bouncing in her SUV along the winding, tree-lined country roads, with nothing but starlight and adrenaline to guide us. Thankful for her high beams and the amber glow of the moon beaming hope through the windshield, we made a plan for how to get in and out as unscathed as possible from Hotel Hell.

I had to ask her what she had sensed was going on that had given her such a fright.

Lisa shivered, leaning forward, gripping the steering wheel. Im not sure exactly, but I got the sense my hotel used to be a brothel way back whenand lets just say, someones or many peoples lives came to an abrupt and not-so-happy ending in that room.

Gulp.

On the hour-long drive, trying not to get more spooked than we already were, I turned my curiosity to Lisa. I wanted to know about the life path that had led to her being such a powerful empath, psychic, and teacher. She shared with me that she had been sensitive from an early age, and shed become a multiple black belt in karate to gain the mental and physical strength to cope.

Being psychic as a kid didnt feel like a gift. If I could have, I wouldve given that gift back, she said, laughing.

But, thankfully, she wasnt able to give it back. In fact, thank God (for all of our sakes) she fell to her knees and said the prayer all empaths must declare at some point in their lives: God, angels, guides, teaching spirits, ancestors, whoever you are and wherever you are, if Im going to live in this crazy world with all its density, jagged edges, and energy vampires, then come out, come out wherever you are and help me do this!

I nodded vigorously. I could relate, having had my own dark nights of the soul. In fact, Im known for telling clients, A crisis is a horrible thing to waste. If we become, as Margaret Mead suggested, the anthropologists of our lives, and remain conscious as we go through our breakdowns, we will discover they are predecessors to our great breakthroughs. In other words, if we look for it, well discover what we thought was the worst thing that could ever happen to us becomes the springboard for our purpose in life, the means by which we can make a true contribution to other people walking a similar path.
