There is a way to happiness that is meant for all, but the path is known by few. It is a tradition that has existed in Judeo-Christianity from the beginning, founded on the Scriptures, and nurtured by the Church. It is the way of prayer and contemplation, and its goal is to become fully human and alive, integrated and mature, through a transforming union with Jesus Christ through which we become truly ourselves. This book is about that transforming union Gods plan for our happiness.Praise for Hammer & FireIt seems that God raises up, for each era, a spiritual master to write a guidebook for those who desire to make progress in the spiritual life. Past eras have had Thomas a Kempis Imitation of Christ, St. Teresa of Avilas Way of Perfection, and St. Francis de Sales Introduction to the Devout Life. Today we have Fr. Raphael Simons Hammer & Fire, whose author, a Jewish psychiatrist turned Trappist monk, integrates the wisdom of past spiritual classics, his own experience as a contemplative monk, and a deep knowledge of contemporary psychology, to produce a spiritual guide uniquely suited to our time. This eminently practical guide is an invaluable resource for the man or woman of today who is seeking to find the one true happiness in this life union with God.Roy Schoeman, author Salvation is from the Jews and Honey From the RockHammer & Fire is an accessible and inspiring guide to the riches of the Catholic faith. Those who have had the good fortune of having known Fr. Raphael as a spiritual director will appreciate that now many others can experience the clear, simple, and beautiful wisdom of his guidance. A son of Abraham and a psychiatrist, by Gods grace Fr. Raphael became a most faithful monk and son of the Church. I highly recommend this excellent and very orthodox book.Fr. Matthew Lamb, Chairman and Professor, Dept. of Theology, Ave Maria UniversityWith its message of Gods fatherly love and affection, Hammer & Fire is a blessing for every reader. The authors compassionate advice for those who suffer emotional ills addresses the necessary integration of the spiritual and psychological dimensions of the human person. As a psychotherapist who specializes in the treatment of emotional-spiritual afflictions from a Catholic perspective, I highly recommend this timeless work.Suzanne M. Practical Hints on Spiritual Reading

Cardinal Merciers Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Prayer for Priests

A Prefatory Letter fromLeo-Joseph Cardinal Suenens
April 1987

Dear Father,

In this new and revised edition of your book on prayer you touch, in a deep and happy way, many aspects that situateprayer in the fullness of life and human happiness.

You should not be surprised that I appreciated particularly what you say to our dear charismatic prayer groups. You rightly insist on the fact that the gifts of the Spirit are meant to lead to an esteem and longing above all for the highest gift, charity, and for the sanctifying gifts of the Spirit. As you say: Where charity and the sanctifying gifts of the Spirit are not primarily sought, the Charismatic Renewal becomes unbalanced and misdirected and loses the guidance of the Spirit. This is the message of Saint Paul for all the ages. Thank you for repeating it to all of us.

Your book touches a variety of aspects which bring prayer into the full context of human, liturgical and even ecumenical life.

May this book be a help for many, and equip them for apostolic fruitfulness in the various conditions in which they live. May this Marian Year starting at Pentecost teach our Christians to beunited deeply with Mary, Mother of the Church, and thus to be open to the fullness of the working of the Holy Spirit.

Your book should be read in that light by many.

With my very cordial good wishes,

(signed) L.J. Card. Suenens

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come, O Holy Spirit,
fill the hearts of Thy faithful
and enkindle in them the fire of Thy Love.

V. Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created.

R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let Us Pray

O God, who did instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that in the same Spirit we may relish what is wise and always rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ Our Lord.
