I am a university professor and know Lawrence on a professional level through industry associations we both belong to. While I knew that Lawrence was a popular author and self-defense expert, martial arts really arent my thing Quite honestly, The Big Bloody Book of Violence would never have been on my radar screen to purchase or read, but when Lawrence asked me as a fellow author to review his manuscript as a favor I agreed. What I quickly realized in the first few pages is just how much someone like me SHOULD be reading this book.

First, the authors do a fabulous job of putting violence in perspective. I was fascinated to learn about the types of criminals and their behavior patterns. But most importantly, I was glad to read the awesome tips that will help me be more consciously aware in the future. Will I become a martial arts expert after reading this book? No, of course not. Will I take a martial arts class? Likely not. But I WILL apply many of the practical tips that the authors recommend herein, actions which ANYONE can implement to help keep themselves safe.

Thank you Lawrence and Kris for making me more aware and better prepared! Kudos for bringing such an important and often unspoken topic to the forefront. It enables simple sheep like me to understand that I really do need to be responsible for my own safety, to be more aware of whats going on. I may not win if I find myself facing a big bad guy, but I certainly have a better chance than I did before reading this book. And, I now know how to avoid doing really stupid things. From the first pages of this book it is refreshingly apparent that Kane and Wilder are not suggesting ways or means to kick, punch, or shoot yourself out of a bad situation. Comprehensive and thorough, this big book lasers right in on its subject without ego or other distractions. Threats defined and methods recommended to avoid or to counter falling prey to violence are numerous and realistic. Implementing even a fraction of this books suggestions will substantially increase your overall safety. I just wish the title was less provocative; I wouldnt want The Big Bloody Book of Violence discovered on my bookshelf and misinterpreted if, Heaven forbid, Im ever investigated after using force in self-defense. Kane and Wilder do an excellent job of pointing out that the sexes are not equal. In a self-defense book it is vital that REALITY is the focus and they do this well. As much as the media would like you to believe that men and women are the samein the world of violence, nothing could be further from the truth. The authors give great advice for the average woman when it comes to what they need to do if they are concerned about being responsible for their own safety.
