While living in an apartment-sharing community, he immediately furnished his entire room as a magical temple. In Memoriam
Josef Knecht
Losing a close friend, a reliable colleague, an intellectual sparring partner, a confidant of more than forty years, and a loyal comrade-in-arms is always a harrowing experience. The more so if it is someone with whom you have shared for decades the ritual magic circle, the invocation of deities, the evocation of demonic spirits, the wild dance and ecstatic songs of Pan and Hecate, the juggling of the elemental forces of Fire, Earth, Air and Water, the charging of talismans and amulets, the visions and insights of divination, the discovery of processes and laws governing sublunar and cosmic life, the intuition and gnosis of trance work and revelationin short, all the vagaries and successes, the issues and triumphs, the light and the darkness of a magicians life. Only a very few shared human experiences could be of a more intimate nature.
It is therefore with the deepest regret that we announce the demise of our dear friend, coauthor and staunch ally Josef Knecht, who, as the Bard was wont to put it, shuffled off this mortal coil before the English edition of our book finally saw the light of day. His ready wit and intellectual prowess, his erudition and critical faculty, his sense of humor, his open-mindedness and uncompromising honesty, his indefatigable love for humanity, and his ever-open huge, kind heart made him a partner second to none and a privilege to know. He will not be forgotten.
