Introduction

S ince its release in 1987 Making Money Made Simple has become recognised as the standard work for people who wish to learn the principles of saving and investing money. Seldom a day passes that I dont receive at least one letter or email telling me how that book has changed somebodys life.

I became used to comments of Why dont they teach this in schools? or I wish I had read this when I was young but gradually I began to realise that young people had a special need a book written especially for them to show them where to start. After all, you have to learn to make money before you can manage it.

The resolve to write such a book strengthened when I was at a 21st birthday party for the daughter of a friend. During the evening I started chatting with a group of bright young people the kind of men and women you would expect to be our future leaders. To my amazement they feared the future, were scared at the prospect of trying to find a job and were concerned about their ability to handle the challenges that life will undoubtedly present to them. I left thinking If these people feel like this, what must the others be going through?

Soon afterwards, in unrelated incidents, two couples who were clients of our company suffered the trauma of having a teenage child commit suicide. There was no warning or obvious reason, in either case.

A teenage suicide is a tragic waste of an important life and these incidents reinforced my belief that many of our young people are experiencing feelings of confusion and inadequacy as they try to cope with the challenges of a new era dominated by technology and a drive for efficiency at all costs. While these feelings are understandable, it is true that every generation has had its difficulties and the techniques for personal growth and achievement that have worked before will continue to work now.

The aim of this book is to show you how to approach the challenges that lie ahead and to guide you into a success pattern instead of a failure pattern. The road to success can be tough, but those who are prepared will find there are boundless opportunities waiting to be taken. As the great inventor Thomas Edison said, If we did all the things we are capable of doing we would literally astound ourselves. The recipe for wealth is quite simple: you just need to be earning more than you are spending so you have money left over to invest. Once you can do that, its only a matter of investing the surplus wisely. This book will show you how to improve your skills to increase your income and then explain simple strategies to make your money work for you.

I am delighted that my son James has co-authored this book with me. He brings a young persons insight to the book that I could not achieve on my own.

Our wish for you is that you will approach the future with confidence instead of fear and that you will astound yourself at what you find you can do. The future of our world depends on it.
