A Note to Our Teacher-Readers
Uncommon Sense Teaching may sound like a presumptuous title. After all, if youve already been teaching for a while, most insights about teaching seem like simple common sense.
Enter Barb Oakley and Terry Sejnowski. Their massive open online course (MOOC) Learning How to Learn, with its brain-based approach to teaching and learning, has catapulted into being one of the most popular massive open online courses in the world, taken by millions. This popularity is a tribute to the value people place on fresh, practically useful insights. The course combined Terrys expertise as a computational neuroscientist and neural network pioneer at the Salk Institute and Barbs know-how as a professor of engineering, a linguist, and an adventurous world traveler to explain how brains learn. Much of the information in the course was so new it hadnt made its way into schools of pedagogy. But it is profoundly useful in helping people learn more effectively. And it also overturns some commonsense intuitions about how to approach teaching.
