Kierkegaard (1847)

Contents

Christopher B. Barnett specializes in modern theology, Christian spirituality, the philosophy of technology, and the relation between theology and the arts (especially cinema and literature). He received his doctor of philosophy in theology from the University of Oxford and taught at Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia, prior to coming to Villanova University, where he is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies. He also has served as Guest Researcher at the Unittsarchiv in Herrnhut, Germany, and at Sren Kierkegaard Forskningscenteret in Copenhagen.

In addition to several articles and book chapters, Dr. Barnett has authored three books, Kierkegaard, Pietism and Holiness (Ashgate, 2011), From Despair to Faith: The Spirituality of Sren Kierkegaard (Fortress, 2014), and Kierkegaard and the Question Concerning Technology (Bloomsbury Academic, 2019), and is working on Historical Dictionary of Kierkegaards Philosophy (Rowman and Littlefield, 2021). He has also coedited two volumes, Theology and the Films of Terrence Malick (Routledge, 2016) and Scorsese as Theologian (Brill, 2019). Raised in Birmingham, Alabama, he now lives in the Philadelphia area.

These translations follow the standard Danish edition of Kierkegaards writings, Sren Kierkegaards Skrifter. A complete reference for each selection will be provided in a footnote at the beginning of its given chapter. Otherwise, I have kept footnotes to a minimum, so as to avoid distracting the reader with concerns that would apply primarily to specialists.

Translating Kierkegaard is, to borrow the phrase, no walk in the park. There is the fundamental challenge of aligning nineteenth-century Danish with twenty-first-century Englisha substantial problem in and of itself, made even more difficult by Kierkegaards complex (if often alluring) use of punctuation, syntax, grammatical mood, and the like. Among these traits, Kierkegaards use of punctuation is particularly taxing for the translator. Kierkegaard was intrigued by how punctuation could influence meaning, so much so that he considered himself a master at pairing rhetoric and punctuation. As he bluntly puts it in an 1847 journal entry, [With punctuation] I defer to absolutely no one, and I very much doubt that there is any Danish author who can equal me in this respect.reader first and foremost, I have given preference to linguistic clarity over textual eccentricities and scholarly niceties.

Next, there are accompanying yet significant issues pertaining to Kierkegaards sociocultural location and perspective. For example, Kierkegaards views on gender roles tend to echo the presuppositions of his own day, though occasionally he does push against patriarchal assumptions in subtle yet decisive ways. Something similar might be said about Kierkegaards use of exclusive language. In keeping with the conventions of nineteenth-century Western literature, he frequently uses the third-person singular masculine pronoun (
