Nurses have a hard job. They need advice that works.

Being a nurse is physically and emotionally demanding; the shifts are long and grueling, there are always more tasks than time, and both your patients and coworkers can be difficult. Its no wonder that so many nurses suffer from stress and burnout.

But finding ways to cope is hard, and most self-help books just arent written for nurses. If youre working 12-hour shifts, you barely have enough time for basic needs, much less elaborate self-care routines designed for people with normal working schedules.

Habits for Nurses is different, because it was written by a registered nurse with a degree in psychology. In this book, Beau Salts, RN draws on years of experience to provide you with effective, concrete steps you can take to improve your quality of life. This guide includes practical advice on:

Overcoming negative thoughts

Building emotional resilience and managing stress

Quick home-based workouts

A simple method for effective task management

Minimizing the time you spend on household chores

Advice on communicating with patients - even difficult ones

And much more!

Salts knows these tips work, because he uses them himself. Habits for Nurses is a book with honest, practical advice from someone whos spent plenty of time in the trenches, just like you. Nurses have a uniquely challenging job. They need tips tailored to their needs, from someone who knows how things work.

Introduction
A re you a nurse who is feeling overwhelmed by the stresses of the job the - photo 4
A re you a nurse who is feeling overwhelmed by the stresses of the job, the long hours, and the requests to work extra shifts? Do you feel that the profession is sometimes so demanding that it saps your energy, robs you of your free time, and directly contributes to your lack of a personal life? I know I do.
This book has been a labor of love, and I am thrilled that it has finally found its way into your hands. It is all about nurses and upping our quality of life. We are busy people. Not only on the job, but in our personal lives as well. Many of us work long shifts. Some of us work long shifts PLUS have a long commute to work.
When I worked medical-surgical, my shift was twelve hours, plus I had an hour commute to and from work. Many other nurses are in similar situations, and our home lives are strained because of the long work hours. This book is all about making simple and practical self-improvements.
Allow me to introduce myself. I am Beau Salts, and I work full-time as a registered nurse. I also happen to have a thing for dumping the contents of my brain onto paper in a form that is useful to others.
As a male nurse, I have been mistaken countless times for a doctor or a pharmacist. I have had patients instinctively answer a question I asked, yes maam, er, I mean yes sir. Does it bother me? Not one bit. Remember thiswhat matters is what you think of yourself, not what others think of you. What other people think of you is none of your business.
I have worked medical-surgical, outpatient hemodialysis, and psychiatric. Everyone knows med-surg is hectic, but I would say outpatient HD was a level above med-surg in the insanely fast-paced and stressful department. HD was unbelievably busy.
It was either sink or swim, and I learned so many lessons there. My time-management skills were honed, and I learned to operate in an environment that would make many people have a meltdown. Anyone that has worked a few changeovers knows exactly what I am talking about.
I have lived and learned, and I continue to look forward to learning new life lessons every day. I am sure that you could share many lessons with me as well and I would love to hear what you have to say. I believe that as nurses, we should all be in this together.
In my experience, most nurses are very helpful with one another. There are exceptions, just as there are in any line of work or endeavor. But the majority are willing to help each other. As a case-in-point, when I worked medical-surgical, there were times when I would give another nurses patient a pain medication, so that nurses lunch break would not have to be disturbed. Other nurses would often help me in this manner and many other ways.
More experienced nurses can help newer nurses as the newbies encounter inevitable situations that school somehow didnt fully prepare them for. I believe that when we help one another, the entire profession benefits.
Not only that, our patients and their families also benefit. When nurses help other nurses, what we essentially have is a giant think tank where all of our individual knowledge and experiences collide. I would argue that two brains are better than one, and three brains are better than two.
While the book does not contain solutions to every problem we may face, it does provide new ways of thinking about common problems and unique ways of attacking the challenges that we face. My intention is that the angles I present will help make our lives easier, more organized, efficient, and enjoyable.
I am far from perfect, but I have been in the trenches, made mistakes, and learned from them. I am now passing these lessons on, and I trust that they will touch lives.
This book is the inaugural edition of a series of books on success habits for nurses. The series will take a holistic approach to success in nursing, including tactics to help both on the job and at home, because it is all connected.
Topics that we will dive into include self-improvement (both personally and professionally), making exercise practical (and getting it DONE), user-friendly nutrition, communications, back health, putting chores on autopilot, and more.
This first book will serve as the kick-off and will explore a variety of topics that are infinitely relevant to a nurses life. This book will go into some level of depth on each topic but will not be totally comprehensive. Topics will be dissected further in upcoming books, and new fresh topics will be covered as well.
Perhaps you are busy helping your kids with their homework every night or taking care of your four dogs. Whatever the case may be, our goal is to free up time in as many areas of our life as possible. The overall effect will be a net gain of free time, or at the very least, less feeling overwhelmed and more confidence that we have it together.
