TABLE OF CONTENTS
This is the moment to acknowledge that you are the owner of your own life. You are not a bystander or an eyewitness. You are in the thick of it. You and you alone own your moments. The question is: what are you going to do with them?
Have you ever read the book Love Does by Bob Goff? Bob is an attorney. But hes so much more than an attorney. Hes a man who lives his life in such a way that most of us would if we could only just shed ourselves of our self-defeating inhibitions and cumbersome expectations. Bob says, Something happens when you feel ownership. You no longer act like a spectator or consumerbecause youre an owner.
Wise, wise man.
A Los Angeles resident, Bob claims his office is at Disneyland on Tom Sawyers Island. He says he does all his best thinking there at the picnic table at the end of a little pier right across from the pirate ship.
At first blush, this, of course, sounds ridiculous. No sane-brained fellowespecially no attorneywould take up office space in the land of adventure, folly, and toddlers. But Bob Goff actually does. Because being magical, because being allowed to dream and do the unthinkable, is very worthwhile. And he realizes that magic is so much more valuable than cubicle space in life.
Bob writes, Heres a strange truth Ive noticed. Almost everyone knows about Tom Sawyer Island at Disneyland, but most people dont go. Maybe its because its surrounded by water and you have to take a raft to get there. But its really not that tough to do. Lots of people want to go. Some people even plan to go. But most forget, or just dont get around to it. Its one of those well do that next trip kinds of places for a lot of people. Tom Sawyer Island is like most peoples lives I think: they never get around to crossing over to it.
Living a life fully engaged and full of whimsy and love is something most people plan to do, but along the way they just kind of forget. Their dreams become one of those well go there next time deferrals. The sad thing is, for many there is no next time because passing on the chance to cross over is an overall attitude toward life rather than a single decision. Most people think they need more opportunities, but what they really need is a change of attitude.
As I write this, I am now sixty-eight years old. Ive spent the bulk of my life dedicated to helping others maximize their potential and live their dream life. This starts by helping people change their attitudes, which ultimately does provide them with more opportunities. And the most important part of maximizing your potential is taking ownership of your life.
Not tomorrow.
Not next week.
But today.
Right now.
Maximizing your potential is about not deferring your hopes and dreams, ultimately missing outlike so many do with Tom Sawyer Island at Disneylandbut instead taking advantage of every opportunity, allowing yourself to believe that your world is bigger than what youre currently settling for.
I have been a long-time fan of Lisa DeMayo. She has a spirit that is absolutely contagious. And Im so thrilled shes finally put it all down on paper for us. I believe the wisdom found in this book will rub right off onto you. In these pages, Lisa tells storiesmany deeply personalthat really display the art of true-life ownership. She sets down in words not just a few good ideas, but genuine roadmaps to getting what youve always desired out of life.
Lisa does not believe in the art of quick fixes or hidden secrets that will unveil a new life in 30 seconds flat. She wants much more for your life than a momentary about-face. She wants real change. Lifelong change. Much like I do, Lisa believes in the power of the individual and the power of attitude changes.
I hope you will read this book eagerly. I hope you will soak up its wisdom and then choose to take action and really own your life. Your past is in your past, but its up to you how you author your future.
Shall we begin?
Jack Canfield
Life is a journey, not a destination. Do you believe that? I do. And do you know why? Because the final destination, like it or not, is death. Not one of us is exempt from getting out of the game of life alive. Everything eventually will be goneour fears, dreams, hopes, humiliations, excitementall of it. All each of us leaves behind is a legacy and some memories to be shared amongst friends and family for a few generations.
That can be a hard pill to swallow, I know. But the sooner you believe thisthe sooner you start living for the journey and not the destination and the sooner youll really have a chance at having the life you desire.
