It creeps up on you without warningperhaps while chatting with a friend, scrolling through social media, or even just while walking down the street.

All it takes is the hint of someone doing or having something you perceive as better than you, and it hits. A feeling takes overintense, blinding, gutting. Your brain starts spinning with toxic thoughts about yourself (or others), and youre left feeling ashamed, guilty, and even worthless.

Its called comparisonitis. And if youve suffered from it, youre NOT alone.

Comparisonitis is a contagious, socially transmitted condition that occurs when you compare yourself to others so frequently and fiercely that youre left paralyzed, with your confidence in tatters and your self-worth plummeting. It may sound trivial, but this affliction can have serious adverse effects on our mental health, leading to depression, anxiety, overthinking, and regret.

To make matters worse, our comparison culture is only expanding. Thanks to social media, we have more opportunities to compare ourselves than ever before, and even kids are falling into the trap.

Described as a self-help guru by Elle magazine, Melissa has experienced the effects of comparisonitis first hand, having worked extensively in industries like acting, modeling and dancing where comparison culture is not only rampant but openly encouraged.

Melissa knows all too well how comparisonitis is infecting our minds and hurting our hearts, and in this book, shell help you heal from this disease, liberate your headspace, and raise your self-worth so radically that youll never let comparison rob you of your joy and happiness again.

by Gabrielle Bernstein

There has never been a better time to look at comparison. The human tendency to judge ourselves and our lives based on those around us is age-old. Yet as Melissa so aptly points out, the pool from which we draw that comparison has grown. As our world becomes increasingly connected through travel and communication, were suddenly exposed to far more people and ideas than we ever were in the past.

On the whole, that has potential to be a good thing but without the right tools to process this increased input, it can be dangerous. If being exposed to more people and ideas is a source of inspiration and empowerment, its helpful. If it pushes us into comparisonitis, it isnt.

Social media plays a big role in this increased input. It has exacerbated our tendency to compare, taking a comparisonitissniffle and turning it into a full-blown flu. Melissa isnt the first to notice something is up with social media and the way we use it. Yet shes breaking new ground in this book by suggesting that the issue goes much deeper than this, down to the very way we evaluate ourselves and our role in the world around us. Whether its through body image, finances, relationships, family structure, parenting, or career goals, comparisonitis can knock even the most successful person to the ground. Im with Melissa on this, because Ive seen it in myself and my readers. Weve always had comparisonitis. Social platforms just make the struggle more obvious.

Thats part of why its so important for us to do our work to heal comparisonitis right here and now. Addressing the way we compare ourselves to others can be life-changing. In some cases, its the missing ingredient that transforms us into super attractors.

The metaphysical text A Course in Miracles by Helen Schucman (1976) states: Love makes no comparisons. This book offers readers the guidance on how to transform comparisonitis by learning to see the world through the lens of love.

Since Melissa refers to people who have recovered from comparisonitis as unicorns, I suppose that makes this book a sort of unicorn training manual. I am so grateful that such a manual has arrived! Its been infinitely helpful to me. My hope is that the same holds true for you.
