INTRODUCTION:
WHAT AM I GOING TO SAY?

What am I going to say?

What am I going to say?

What am I going to say?

As a young entrepreneur, I was asked to speak to an audience on the topic of true success. That vague phrase was all the direction they gave, so I met a friend for lunch hoping he would know what the organization had meant by that. In the meantime, the pages on the calendar were flying by, the speech was getting closer every day, and the only thing going through my mind was, What am I going to say?

Can you relate?

You have a speech coming up you are tasked with giving a presentation your hard work has been noticed and now you have to speak on the subject of your work you are giving a toast you are sharing at your church you need to speak at some meetings you are the CEO and you need to address your company

You have a speech coming up, and you dont know what to say.

You are wondering how to shape your thoughts into a speech.

As a public speaker with over 19 years experience, Ive received numerous requests to speak on a wide variety of vague topics. Ive often found myself staring at a blank page, wondering what to say.

I understand what it feels like to feel lost.

Additionally, I know how you feel because I regularly work with people like you: someone who has a speech coming up and doesnt know where to begin.

This small book will help you from start to finish. Though I speak, coach, and write much more extensively on communication, I felt the need to compose this book as a quick guide to help you craft the speech you are wondering how to write.

This book gives you a simple, repeatable structure for your speeches.

In addition, Ive filmed two short videos where you can watch me teach the first (and most important) part of this booklet. This is free to you, and you can Click Here to find the videos.

You have a speech to write, and this book will help you get there. Thanks for inviting me to be your guide!

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Speech: A presentation, toast, message, seminar, keynote, sermon, lecture, or prepared answer for an interview.

Introduction: The beginning of the speech that prepares people for the main content.

Body: The middle of the speech which contains the instruction, lessons, message, teaching, illustrations, explanations, and points.

Conclusion: The end of the speech that often answers the question, what now?

Content: The meat of the speech, such as explanations, key knowledge, and points. The body of the speech has the meat which teaches, informs, inspires, and instructs. The body also has spice , which illustrates, connects, and adds interest to the meat. Content refers to the meat, not the spice.

Supplements: The spice of the speech, such as analogies, anecdotes, humorous statements, stories, props, and other forms of illustrating content.

Message: The crux of what you want to communicate, the big idea, the reason for the speech. It is referred to as the WHAT.

Finding WHY is a process of discovery, not invention.

Simon Sinek

STEP #1. START WITH THE QUESTIONS

Were you and I to meet each other at a conference, the following sentence would quickly follow:

Hi, my name is Mike, whats yours?

The what is your name formula is part of every initial conversation. Before two people talk together, beyond asking about the rain in Seattle (where I live), two people will explicitly or implicitly ask for the name of the other when they meet.

Conversations nearly always start with questions like: What is your name? Where do you live? What do you think about X sports team? What are you thinking about having for a drink/dinner? Where are you headed?

Questions initiate conversations.

This is true of speeches, too. There are three questions that need to be asked when you craft your speech. One of these questions should be asked twice. If you miss asking these questions, it is possible that you will miss truly connecting with your audience.

Here are the three questions and the four-part pattern in which they should be asked: WHY? who? WHAT? WHO? (Below you will discover the reason for the lower case who?)

Mike, I just want to get to writing the speech.

I get that. I did the Clifton Strengths Finder , which revealed that I am an activator. I love that made-up word! Its a fancy way of saying, I like to get started and dont want to wait!

If you are a detailed person, who loves details, then you will like this short chapter. In fact, you may wish I wrote a longer, more detailed chapter detailing the details involved for preparing you to craft a speech.

If you are an activator, then you will be tempted (like I am) to skip to the end. Dont do that. Remember, we start conversations with questions to connect with the other person. Likewise, we should start writing speeches by asking questions to ensure we connect with other people.

If you skip the questions, you skip the connection.

This book is a practical guide. Take out a pen and paper or open a blank document. Write the following questions at the top left of your page (for executive coaching clients, I suggest leaders write these four words at the top of their document when preparing meeting agendas):

WHY?

who?

WHAT?

WHO?

THE WHY

To connect with your audience and get started on a speech that really matters, you need a WHY beyond the obvious. You need to find a WHY that is not just about production (money, sales, meeting, obligations, expectations, invitation). You need a WHY that helps people.
