Chapter 1: Your Brain, The Super Computer
The human brain is the fastest and most capable computer in the world, even better than the most advanced mainframes and desktops ever created. Its so powerful that it commands our bodily functions so that we can stand and sit, talk and shout, love and hate. It is the reason why we are capable of composing wonderful songs, artworks, skyscrapers, computers and mobile phones. It stores memory and relieves them vividly whenever we want. It helps us manage our emotions, our jobs and our relationships. It is an organic computer that learns its mistakes and naturally upgrades itself. Basically, our brains are our single best tool for survival and development.
According to research, the memory of humans has the capability to memorize a hundred-digit number or even more and then repeat it backwards and forwards. The human memory also has the ability to memorize all the plays by Shakespeare word for word. It also has the capacity to meet a hundred people in span of 20 minutes and still be able to recall every single name.
However, not all people have the ability to perform these activities efficiently. Some people cannot even do these at all. Although we have equal potentials, our mental capacities differ depending on how well we exercise our brains. Since the brain is not automatically programmed to be efficient instantly, it has to be trained first.
A highly capable brain is something that you can achieve with proper training. As they say, it is not too late to teach your brain. In order to adapt well in our society, you should be able to deal with problems quickly and successfully and that requires a brain that is highly fit to adapt to changing situations. Your brain should be prepared to read and acclimatize to the various challenges and situations that arise in your life. As more and more problems arise, training the brain to be able to learn and adapt to various situations will be as common as training the body. Nowadays, more and more experts are encouraging people to find ways to maximize various brain functions.
Why Optimizing Mental Performance Matters
Times have changed big time. Back in the day, economic success was just a matter of working very, very hard the harder you work, the greater your economic success. My parents and grandparents were part of those last generations that were able to more than provide for their families, which were quite bigger back then compared to the average family these days. My grandparents were able to send my parents and their siblings to good schools and enjoy some of the good things in life even with modest jobs and positions. It was similar for my own parents.
Sad to say, those were indeed the days its a whole new ballgame these days. With the numerous and very significant technological advances made in our lifetime the Internet being the most prominent of all its no longer hard work that makes the difference between economic success or failure. Its now ideas that rule the economy and market place. This has ushered what we now call as the knowledge economy.
Those who come up with the most innovative and groundbreaking ideas have become the people with the fattest wallets and bank accounts such as Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Jeff Bozos, Larry Ellison, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, Mark Zuckerberg and Paul Allen who all have more than US$ 10 billion each. Yes, you read that right. Each of them have that much net worth and not collectively. One thread that binds them together is that they were able to amass such large fortunes primarily through knowledge or information products like investment management, the Internet and computer software.
The truth is we all cant be billionaires millionaires even or powerful political geniuses or be able to conquer the world with like King Nebuchadnezzar did ages ago. That however, doesnt downplay the importance of optimizing our brainpower or mental performance because doing so can still contribute a lot to making our lives much, much better in many ways.
REAL WEALTH: RELATIONSHIPS
I remember one time when I woke up really late. As I left my room and went to the dining room, I was surprised to find my parents werent at home, considering it was the weekend. Because it was already late in the morning, I was famished and ate breakfast alone.
When they got home a few minutes after starting to munch on my breakfast sandwich, I asked them with food still in my mouth whered they come from. They said they went to mass, to which I asked why. My moms answer floored me to the point I wish I stayed on the floor:
Its my birthday.
No amount of profuse apologies ever made it up to her that dayor even weeks after. I couldnt reverse the damage done on her birthday. It made that particular birthday rather unforgettable my mom still remembers it to this day, though with much humor compared to years before albeit for the wrong reason. Thank God for loving and forgiving mothers like mine.
