This book contains advice and information relating to health care. It should be used to supplement rather than replace the advice of your doctor or another trained health professional. If you know or suspect you have a health problem, it is recommended that you seek your physicians advice before embarking on any medical program or treatment. All efforts have been made to assure the accuracy of the information contained in this book as of the date of publication. This publisher and the authors disclaim liability for any medical outcomes that may occur as a result of applying the methods suggested in this book.
All but two of the addicts who shared their stories in this book chose to remain anonymous and picked their own pseudonyms. Because of the sensitive and personal nature of this topic, every effort was made to give them the opportunity to review their stories for accuracy. Names and some personal characteristics of patients have been changed to disguise their identities. Any resulting resemblance to persons living or dead is entirely coincidental and unintentional.
Some of the material in chapters first appeared in a different form in The Jefferson Monthly and The Jefferson Journal, respectively.

It is abundantly clear to anyone who watches or reads the news that the world is in the midst of an addiction crisis. Opioids steal most of the headlines. Whether it is from heroin, meth, or another substance, thousands of people have died, and sadly more will die in the coming months and years. Many of you reading this book are terrified that someone you love will be a casualty of this crisis. If that is your fear, and you are reading this book to prevent that from happening, you are in the right place. But I want you to stop and take a breath before you dig in to what I hope will become a valuable life-giving resource for you. This book does not address politics or policy, the legal or penal system, or the first responder issues involved with drug overdoses. As critical as all these factors are, we see them as the end result of a broken approach to addiction. If addiction is a tree, these are the leaves on the tree. In this book, we will address the entire treethe roots, the trunk, the branches, even the soil in which the tree is growing, as well as many of the leaves.
Addiction is a chronic condition, not a broken leg that can be fixed by setting the bone and putting the limb in a cast; nor can it be solved by throwing someone in jail or even in a hospital detox unit. Chronic conditions have a multiplicity of causes, but also a multiplicity of factors that can promote healing. Everything that you do to support that healing decreases the chances that you will someday receive the nightmare phone call that your loved one has overdosed. I sincerely hope that within the pages of this book you find all the support, strength, and resources that you need to deal with this terrifying and difficult condition.
M Y NAME IS P AUL , and Im a recovering alcoholic. My wife, Maiya, is a recovering opioid addict. Five of our nine kids (we have three biological and six adopted, all of whom are young adults now) have struggled with substance use. As much as addiction has affected my life on a personal level, it is also one of the most critical health problems of our time.
We are in the midst of a devastating addiction crisis in the United States and around the worldone that is affecting each and every one of us. You picked up this book because you or someone you love is struggling with addiction. That addiction probably involves opioids or even heroin, though it may be an addiction to another hard drug like cocaine or meth, to alcohol or marijuana, or to something more seemingly benign, like gaming, the internet, or that brand-new smartphone you cant stop yourself from checking over eighty times a day (the national average).
