About The Authors
David G. McAfee is a Religious Studies Graduate, a journalist, and the author of two other titles: Mom, Dad, Im an Atheist: The Guide to Coming Out as a Non-believer and Disproving Christianity and other Secular Writings. He is also a columnist for Canadian Freethinker Magazine , as well as a contributor to American Atheist Magazine . McAfee attended University of California, Santa Barbara, and graduated with bachelors degrees in English and Religious Studies with an emphasis on Christianity and Mediterranean religions. He believes strongly that religious education and history should be taught in public schools, including and especially in the United States of America where general knowledge about those topics is severely lacking. It is only by understanding how the religious systems work, and not by ignoring them completely, that McAfee says we can help others to make rational decisions about them.
I dedicate this book to my niece Alex, who first caused me to think about children and their questions regarding belief, and Holly, who is always my final and often my best editor.
Chuck Harrison is an illustrator and writer who lives with his son called Puff and his cat named Monkey in New York. His caffeine fueled works have been printed by DC Comics, Color Ink Book, The South Wedge Quarterly and in many other fine publications. He has also been published by Richard Dolan Press. Everything else you may wish to know about him can be discovered at iLikeChuckHA.com.
This book is for my son Elijah. Without your rampant curiosity and constant questions I never would have been able to make this book. Youre my favorite person ever and I love you more. There, its in print now.
Introduction
What is a belief ? Why do we believe some things and not believe others?
What is religion ? Why do people believe in so many different gods ? Just what are gods, anyway?
These are very important questions with very important answers. Very important, very big answers that have changed the ways we live, work, and play through all of human history.
We will give you the basic answers to these questions and other big questions in hopes that you will better understand the world around you. You will learn that religion and beliefs change almost everything in the world, but that they shouldnt always be used to shape our understandings of it.
These answers will bring about great change and with that great change comes great freedom.
But to understand and learn more about the answer to any question, we first have to agree on the definitions of the words we are going to use definitions explain the meaning of words. If no one agreed on the definitions of words, we would never be able to understand each other!
To help you better understand definitions , we will tell you a story about Dave and Chuck. Dave and Chuck love reading the dictionary because they know that definitions are the keys to understanding anything in any language.
So, to start, here are some definitions that may help:
Believe:
verb
- To think a thing is true or that something is real. Dave and Chuck believe definitions are important because they have seen many people get angry or upset just because they disagree about a words meaning.
- Trust, faith, or confidence in someone or something.
Dave and Chuck believe definitions are important and they believe in always telling the truth.
God:
noun
- A creator or ruler of the world; a superhuman being (or spirit) that is often praised and thought to have power over nature or human activities. Dave and Chuck know that many people believe gods are watching us, but they also know that people can be good to other people without being threatened or promised rewards.
Religion:
noun
- A set of beliefs, usually involving the belief in and love of a superhuman controlling power or god(s). Dave and Chuck dont believe gods exist, but that doesnt mean they hate religions. They think religions are just ideas used by people a long time ago to explain things they didnt understand.
By looking at the history and stories behind the worlds religions, we can find out the answers to our questions and much, much more.
You see, for a lot of people all over the world, religion makes them feel better when they face what we dont really understand about the world, the universe, and pretty much everything.
For a believer, their religion is like a nightlight that keeps the monster in the closet or under the bed away. It makes them feel safe and secure.
But when we search for answers to our questions, we gain something called knowledge. Knowledge is everything that we know and understand about the world. It is all the facts and information we get from living or from education. Dave and Chuck dont practice any religions, but they love gaining knowledge by reading about them all the time!
Knowledge is like a super nightlight! It makes sure theres a whole lot less of the world that we dont understand, so we see there are no monsters to be afraid of.
The book youre now reading is a gateway to knowledge the start of an epic quest. A quest for answers!
And like any epic quest, it helps to start at the beginning.
