With echoes from the Azusa Street revival (190609) still ringing in their ears, the founding fathers and mothers of the Assemblies of God laid the foundation for what would become one of the largest families of Pentecostal churches in the world. The rough-and-tumble world of early Pentecostalism was marked not only by passionate proclamation of the gospel, but in many quarters by a certain impermanence, impetuosity, and lack of wisdom. Responding to these problems, the Assemblies of God was organized in 1914 by those who recognized the need to provide accountability on doctrine, morals, and finances, and also to establish institutions such as schools, a publishing house, and a missions agency.

Almost one hundred years later, it is imperative that the Assemblies of God reexamine how it arrived at this point on the pilgrimage of faith. The reasons for the existence of the Assemblies of God are every bit as compelling today as they were in the beginning. We must not be distracted by secondary issues and lose sight of these core values.

Few people in the Assemblies of God exemplify its founding ideals better than Dr. Stanley M. Horton. A child of the Azusa Street Mission and revival, he went on to become a bridge linking Pentecostalisms past to its present. Through his dozens of books, hundreds of articles, decades of authoring the Adult Teacher Sunday School curriculum, and over sixty years in the classroom, Horton has profoundly shaped and influenced the trajectory of his church. Reflecting the ideals of the Azusa Street revival, he built bridges across racial and denominational lines.

Ironically, this gentle, unassuming scholar became one of the best-recognized names in the Assemblies of God and the broader Pentecostal movement. Graduating with his masters degree in theology from Harvard Divinity School in 1945, his academic credentials initially raised eyebrows among Pentecostals who viewed the academy with suspicion. However, Horton melded academic excellence with pastoral care and quickly proved his commitment to ministry. He has provided an intellectual and theological anchor to countless students and ministers, and has taught us all that Pentecost not only warms the heart, but also energizes the mind.

The Assemblies of God owes a debt of gratitude to Horton. The story of his life and influence, warmly recounted in this volume by Dr. Lois E. Olena and Dr. Raymond L. Gannon, demonstrates how one person, walking humbly and faithful to Gods call, can impact generations to come. The Assemblies of God is where it is today in part because of the broad educational and theological foundation that Horton helped to lay. It is my prayer that Hortons example will inspire others to continue to build upon and enlarge this foundation, building a Pentecostal church marked by excellence, a commitment to biblical scholarship, spiritual sensitivity, and service to others.

George O. Wood
General Superintendent
General Council of the Assemblies of God

I am very happy to see in print this tribute to Stanley Horton, one of my esteemed professors, a model of godliness, sacrifice, and scholarship. I am also delighted to learn more about his life, and through it the history of the Pentecostal movement in North America. All who have been touched by this rich heritage will appreciate this work.

Assemblies of God Theological Seminary alum, author,
Professor of New Testament, Palmer Theological Seminary,

Who has been a greater luminary in the twentieth-century Pentecostal galaxy than Dr. Stanley M. Horton? Many make their mark on but one island of ministry, but heroes impact many. This book shows how this scholar-saint set the standard for Pentecostal scholarship as a model professor, left a unique Gospel witness across the globe, and kept on getting it right. In a nation of conflicted social policies and in a church of confusing racial standards, he showed how one mans life could clearly reveal Christs Church. May this volume inform others as much as my teacher Dr. Horton reformed me. Paul said in 1 Timothy 5:17 to give double honor to the elders who rule well; this read is just a portion of such honor.

Bishop Lemuel Thuston,
Kansas East Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction,
Church of God in Christ

The second half of the twentieth century has seen Pentecostal scholarship emerge and thrive. Out of that emergence, few names are more recognizable than Stanley Horton. Called to teach Bible while a chemistry student at UC Berkeley, Horton did the unthinkable and went to Harvard to prepare for ministry as a Pentecostal scholar. The long shadow of Hortons influence among Pentecostals began humbly and now stretches around the world and into the first decade of the twenty-first century. You may have read his books, but Stanley M. Horton: Shaper of Pentecostal Theology will tell you the rest of the story. As you read, be encouraged and see what a long obedience in the same direction can yield.

Dr. Byron D. Klaus, President,
Assemblies of God Theological Seminary,
Springfield, Missouri

Wielding an influence that has spanned seven decades, Stanley Horton has been the prince of Pentecostal interpretersa successor to Myer Pearlman. This book assembles for readers the essentials of his life and influence. Historians will find that the footnotes rival the value of the text itself. The book offers a noble tribute to a revered teacher whose impact in the classroom, in print, and in person has guided and blessed two generations of grateful students.

Dr. Russell P. Spittler, Provost Emeritus
and Senior Professor of New Testament,
Fuller Theological Seminary,
Pasadena, California

Because of his enormous literary output throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, more Pentecostals know the name Dr. Stanley Horton than any other figure in Assemblies of God history. In a quiet and gentle way, he has shaped both the theology and orthodoxy of modern Pentecostalism. For the first time we are treated to a comprehensive biography of this great man.
