Over the years, the mystery of crystals and their meanings settled into a truth known within my heart, which came into focus the moment I sat down to write the first entries in this book.

When it comes to metaphysical energy, theres nothing that can be said that we dont already know within ourselves; rather what is said is shared to stimulate reflection and build community.

Each of us has our own unique connection to the energies that surround us, and crystals are one of those many energetic forces that we gravitate towards for support, inspiration, and connection. What we may feel, or come to understand, through our relationship with crystals will always be filtered through our experiences and so only represents a slice of awareness. This doesnt make it wrong or worthless, quite the contrary in sharing our awareness with each other, we begin to piece together a greater understanding of the whole.

Before this book was even an idea, my practice had been shifting from telling people the properties of a stone, or what stone to use, into a desire to know how a stone made them feel, what it inspired within them, and how they were going to turn that awareness into action. While you will find information about properties and uses, every word is a pouring forth of my relationship with crystals. Page by page, each entry reminded me of a person or experience in my life that perfectly highlighted that stones energy as Ive come to know it. Synchronistically, anytime I became stuck in the writing process, the crystal I was writing about held incredible guidance for that moment. Even more magically, these entries brought me into a depth of spiritual awareness that continues to influence and morph my personal practice.

My hope is that sharing these reflections with you provides a jumping-off point to deepen your own relationship with crystals. Sometimes we just need to hear someone elses experience or understanding to awaken our own. Lean on these crystal entries and practices when you are at a loss for words, or when you desire a dose of inspiration. Let them go as you find your voice.

As in any field, there are challenges in ethics and sustainability. For crystal enthusiasts, collectors, and healers, the sourcing of stones is a major concern.

In order to grow our collections mindfully, we must inquire Where do these minerals come from? Whos digging them out of the ground? What are the methods used? And are they harming the Earth and/or its inhabitants in the process?

Question your sources

We must actively work towards greater transparency and integrity when it comes to the sourcing of stones. A great place to start is by asking vendors to share their vetting process for the companies they buy from, or whether they know where and how the stones they are selling were mined. A vendor should be equally comfortable disclosing that information or willing to ask the same questions when purchasing their own supply. Asking directly gives them the opportunity to find out or may inspire them to be more conscious with their next purchase.

Theres no way to validate the answers we receive and, currently, no organization exists to monitor crystal-sourcing ethics. We really are trusting our vendors. Having a good relationship with them is helpful.

Investigate where you can give back

And what about all the crystals we may have purchased already without a second thought? It can feel disheartening to think that maybe your new crystal has an unsavoury story. Let that inspire you to learn more about where the crystal is found and find ways to support those communities and environments exploited in the process. If youre a crystal vendor, this would be a very powerful way to recirculate proceeds as an act of gratitude.

While many crystals are the byproduct of other mining endeavours, remaining aware of how everything is ultimately connected encourages us to reflect on other aspects of our consumption. We may not see the land where the minerals are mined, or the people who dig them out of the ground. We may not see the journey the stones take across and around the globe to arrive at the crystal shop. We can, however, remain aware that we are stewards of the Earth and accept that responsibility as a spiritual calling.

Let this inspire you to reflect more deeply on how you build your collection and how you can give back to and care for the Earth.

A crystal collection is an ever-evolving, infinite process. Each stone finding its way to us, intersecting with our experiences, and leaving wisdom in its wake.

Choosing your crystals

Selecting stones can be very intimidating. As a society, we tend to be overthinkers, and so we question ourselves unnecessarily. Many of us come into a crystal shop assuming we know nothing about the crystals shimmering on the tables. While we may have not read all the crystal books, or studied their qualities, we do have an energetic connection drawing us to the stones that are meant to share something with us. Sometimes well recognize this connection by a strong reaction to the stone, which manifests as either an instant attraction or complete repulsion. Sometimes it will be the description that piques our interest. Maybe the crystal will come to us by way of another person. However they arrive, trust that the stones that are meant for you will find their way to you.
