Additional Praise for Sleep Paralysis

Whether sleep paralysis terrifies or fascinates you, this com-prehensive and accessible guide will help you better under-stand this extraordinary sleep phenomenon, offering practical recommendations and exercises for accessing lucid dreams as well as your own unconscious. One of the books I recommend most often.

Jennifer Dumpert, PhD., author of Liminal Dreaming

One of my favorite dream researchers, Ryan Hurd, has updated his excellent guidebook on sleep paralysis, with fresh analysis and information on the strange condition. With great dexterity he weaves the latest neuroscientific explanations in with esoteric and spiritual considerations, and shows how the intriguing states of hypnagogia and lucid dreaming can intersect with sleep paralysis. His personal experiences with these realms, along with the other absorbing accounts hes gathered, inspire and challenge us to respond with curiosity rather than terror.

Lex Lonehood Nover, author of Nightmareland: Travels at the borders of sleep, dreams, and wakefulness

Ryan Hurd has compiled, in a clear and succinct style, a vast compendium of much needed practical information about Isolated Sleep Paralysis (SP). For many experiencers who are also believers, SP emerges as a spiritual question, which Ryan shows can be answered from a believers own perspective. This can be, oftentimes, the introspective and impressionistic launching pad to then seek out additional evidence-based information.

Jorge Conesa-Sevilla, Ph.D., author of Wrestling with ghosts: A personal and scientific account of sleep paralysis

Praise for 1 st Edition of Sleep Paralysis

What if sleep paralysis is not a curse, but an opportunity? What if this state is a gateway for lucid dreaming, even a spiritual initiation? What if the demon or the night hag is actually a guide who can take us on an amazing astral journey if we can go beyond our fear and stop worrying about the body? Ryan knows that all these things are possible, and more, because hes been there.

Robert Moss, author of Dreaming the Soul Back Home

People who suffer sleep paralysis inevitably focus on their fear and discomfort, but rarely do they recognize that this strange experience also holds a huge potential for mind/body growth and enlightenment. Ryan Hurd, a brilliant researcher and emerging leader in the field of dream studies, offers a brand new perspective on sleep paralysis that provides both practical help and inspirational guidance. Hurds excellent new book gives clear and effective advice about how to diminish the painful symptoms of sleep paralysis, while leading readers to a deeper appreciation of the incredible power of the dreaming imaginationa power that can promote greater health and conscious awareness in all of us.

Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D.,
author of Dreaming in the Worlds Religion

If you suffer from sleep paralysis, buy this book. Inside it are powerful techniques, real knowledge and experienced advice from a former sleep paralysis sufferer. Using practical techniques, insightful advice and scientific research, Hurd takes the SP sufferer on a journey from intense fear to real hope and empowerment. Benefit from his insight, and learn how to resolve your sleep paralysis for go od.

Robert Waggoner,
author of Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self

Ryan Hurd ought to be congratulated for writing this book. It needed to be written. I admire his practical, open-minded approach to the subject. Since Hurd himself has experienced SP, his knowledge of the condition goes far beyond that of most experts. This book will be of great benefit to SP sufferers who are having difficulty coping with the condition. Hurd shows us that its possible to transform this generally frightening and disturbing condition into something positive and beneficial, and he provides instructions as to how this can be achieved.

Louis Proud, author of Dark Intrusions: an Investigation into the Paranormal Nature of Sleep Paralysis Experiences

This book on sleep paralysis offers a tremendous contribution to understanding a realm of nocturnal experiences that have previously been dismissed as non-existent, irrelevant or pathological. Ryan Hurd offers extremely clear and valuable information on this neglected topic based upon his many years as an experiencer, and as a knowledgeable guide to the existing research literature. I highly recommend it!

Acknowledgements

This book is the fruit of my personal struggles with the creatures of sleep paralysis, so first and foremost I want to thank them and my dream allies for blessing me with this ancient and powerful way of knowing.

Back on Middle Earth, I want to thank Scott Sparrow, Robert Waggoner, and especially my wife Wendy for editing and proofreading. I benefited mightily from the wisdom and encouragement of my colleague Jorge Conesa Sevilla. My readers of dreamstudies.org also deserve attention for their brave acts of sharing. This small book also rests upon the lifetime work of David Hufford, who is the first modern researcher to respect the tales of sleep paralysis visions and the people who are courageous enough to tell them.

And a special thank you to the Bishop Pine guardians of Inverness, California, whose forested trails I paced while drafting this project in the winter of 2009.

Dedication

I dedicate this book to my aunt Rachael Jean Walter, who taught me to laugh at myself and gain strength from facing my fears.

Table of Contents
Preface

I am pleased to present this newly updated edition of Sleep P aralysis . I decided to release a second English version after the work was revised for a new translation into Spanish. Whats new? The book has been updated to include the latest research in sleep paralysis and its attendant visions, as well as some new perspectives after experiencing the topic as a lived reality for another decade.

Most importantly, the confusing spectrum of possibilities inherent in sleep paralysis is clarified using the language of contemporary dream research. In particular, co-creative dream theory is highlighted further. In this way of thinking, visions and dreams are not a given, written in stone, but created in the moment as a give-and-take response between the dreamer and the dream. I find this to be the case with sleep paralysis visions as well, which is exactly what allows us to move from fear to empowerment in our own process with sleep paralysis.
