I dedicate my memoir to Mangala and our daughters Poornima and Priyanka - photo 2

I dedicate my memoir to Mangala and our daughters, Poornima

and Priyanka , who endured my long periods of absence during my 40 years of army life with fortitude, and a smile.

To my parents whose guidance and advice have helped me be the person I am today.

To all the lionhearted soldiers of 27 Rajput and all the formations that I had the privilege of commanding.

And

To all the future leaders of my great country.

Pre-Publication Praise A most inspirational work by one of Indias - photo 3

Pre-Publication Praise

A most inspirational work by one of India's accomplished Generals who went on to become the first Lieutenant General from North East India. The book will stand as a veritable memento to a soldier's sense of dedication for his nation.

Gen. (Dr) V.K. Singh
Minister of State and former Chief of Army Staff

The book is an elegant narrative of the transformative years of a young boy from Manipur and his rise to the pinnacle; as a Three Star General. Leading his men along the Northern borders as wel las in Counter terrorism Operations, Konsam has been a Gentleman General, with the ferocity of a Tiger. (In doing so), he has chronicled his views on Ethical Leadership with an underlying message to Carry out ones duty and face challenges Head-on. I am sure that this success story will be a motivating read for the youth of India.

Gen. Bipin Rawat,
Chief of Defence Staff

Making of a General is a passionate and deeply moving memoir, cataloguing the journey of a village boy from Manipur who dreamed of serving his country and did so with utmost distinction. Writing the story of ones life is a daunting task, yet Lt Gen. (Dr) K.H. Singh(Retd) managed this arduous task with remarkable frankness and alacrity. The narrative of service rendered during the Kargil War and in the Siachen Glacier and as a Corps Commander in the LoC (Pakistan) is an account of perseverance and excellence and should be a source of inspiration to all, in particular to the youth of North East. The book is sure to earn the unqualified admiration of anyone who is curious to learn more about the character and depths of the Indian Army and the proud men and women who serve in it.

Mr Ranjan Gogoi
Former Chief Justice of India

Do hope that the book reflecting the authors military experience of four decades, zeal for learning and academic distinction and his work in civilian sphere (in Manipur) shall be read by all those who wish to serve the nation.

Mr N.N. Vohra
Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir

It is a tale of perseverance and gritfrom a physically weak, shy boy who was scared of heights and darkness, to rendering his services in the Kargil War and in the Siachen Glacier. The chronicles of his career replete with challenges, pursuit of knowledge and understanding, his astute observations of the geo-political developments in Indias neighbourhood, his pondering over the issues that plague his beloved Manipura place of so much promise with thwarted dreamsis a call to duty for the younger generation to take up leadership and to actively engage with problems and attempt to find lasting solutions.

Ms Pooja Elangbam, IAS
Youngest and Third lady IAS officer from Manipur
Founder & President, Book Club Imphal

This book should be an inspiration not only to a generation of aspirants for profession of arms, but also to all those who are fortunate to serve in the Indian Army, an institution beyond compare.

Introduction

O ne day I will be a Brigadier are the words I wrote in my diary in 1967 dated 26th Januaryperhaps the first chronicled entry of my life. I was then studying in an idyllically located school in a remote village of Charangpat (Lake of the Dragonflies) in the south eastern foothills of Manipur Valley. I was physically weak, shy, and scared of heights and the darkness. Many a mate in my school mocked my physique and ambition of wanting to join the army, leave alone rise to be a Brigadier. Thus, it became a relentless pursuit of self-improvement throughout my formative years in the school days. My yearning for physical fitness, academic and intellectual excellence persisted through most of my early life. Fifty years later, I returned to my roots in Manipur after having served in the Indian Army for nearly 40 years and after having become the first Lieutenant General of North East India.

As a young Lieutenant commissioned into the elite Rajput regiment of the Indian Army it had always been my dream to jot down my lifes journey. As a subaltern, in my quest for adventure and also to get over the fear of heights, I ventured on many mountaineering expeditions, trekking in the Himalayas including an expedition to Mount Kanchenjunga, and skydiving trips in Agra. Later, I led an Infantry Battalion during the Kargil War and commanded a Battalion in the highest battlefield of the world, the Siachen Glacier. The memories of the two years operations in Siachen and in Shyok valley with my troops are truly the finest hours and unforgettable days in my life as a soldier. Still later, I commanded an Infantry Division and a Corps in the Line of Control facing Pakistan and also oversaw Counter Terrorist Operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

My professional exposure also included sensitive responsibilities in the South Block and Sena Bhawan in Delhi where I witnessed policymaking at higher levels from close quarters. There were times when matters did not navigate as one wanted them to. In any event, I felt I contributed my pennys worth.

My interaction with the cadets as Battalion Commander in the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and later with the officers as Commandant of the Infantry School, Mhow, gave me important insights about leadership training and professional development of future leaders of our army. During my tenure in the higher ranks I became increasingly mindful about the effects of the existing personnel policy in the army and its impact on national security.

This book aims to impart some thoughts and lessons that I was able to garner for the future generations. The issue of Ethical Leadership development in the army has been analysed in some detail. Lessons learnt from routine interaction with the soldiers turned out to be change catalysts in my man-management style that I adopted during my various command years. No less were the learning experiences from my colleagues and seniors. The book also attempts to highlight the challenges of the army from across the LoC in the areas South of the Pir Panjal Ranges in Jammu and Kashmir during the period as well as in the hinterland.
