He explores the biblical pattern of leadership, the meaning of true discipleship, the Jewish roots of our faith, and other issues facing the church today. With its timely and revealing message, Revolution in the Church will be a welcome corroboration of the revolution already taking place in your churchor a penetrating wake-up call to action.Praise for Revolution in the ChurchRevolution is not rebelution. It is birthed in the spirit and through a right heart. It is the same radical call to live as Jesus did. . . . This book is not for contented pew-sitters or self-satisfied leaders, but for humble, hungry hearts who want more of Jesus.Ch Ahn, senior pastor, Harvest Rock Church, Pasadena, CA

On February 14, 2001 , the leadership team for FIRE School of Ministry in Pensacola, Florida, was meeting with Derek Brown, a dear fellow worker from England. As we were talking with Derek about our vision to see the Jesus revolution make an impact on our society, he made a simple but profound comment: Before there can be a revolution in the society, there must first be a revolution in the Church.

Of course! There must first be radical, change within the Body before we can bring radical change to the world. Dereks comment stayed with me, ultimately leading to the writing of this book. But not a single word was written as an exercise in abstract theology. The pages that follow reflect years of wrestling through the issue of what really constitutes the New Testament norm for the Church.

More importantly, these pages reflect the importance of actually living out these scriptural truths. That is where one is constantly reminded that talk is cheap, especially with the younger generationa generation that desperately wants reality, not hype. Not only must revolution be a subject of discussion; it must also be a subject of action.

Please take this book as my personal invitation to come along on the journey being undertaken by multitudes of believers across the world.

I hope you will find practical answers in these chapters, along with some fresh new challenges, since all of us at one time or another have probably done our part to promote what I refer to as the religious system, which exists wherever human ways take precedence over divine ways; wherever the will and wisdom of man are superimposed over the will and wisdom of God; wherever church traditions become more sacred than the clear teaching of Gods Word; wherever spiritual progress is thwarted by the flesh, however religious that flesh might appear to be.

I only urge caution to all who would challenge this system. It is costly and treacherous to go against the grain, since the moment we imagine ourselves to be Gods elite, last-days remnant, we have fallen into spiritual pride, which itself is an insidious part of the system we desire to change. Let us proceed with humility, then, asking the Lord to search our hearts first, to strip us of all religious pretension and to deliver us from bondage to dead tradition. Let the revolution begin with us!

My appreciation to Jane Campbell (she is the living embodiment of the word editor), for wholeheartedly embracing this project and pursuing its completion with excellence and enthusiasm. Thanks are also due to project editor Kristin Kornoelje for helping to ensure the quality of the work.

My profound thanks to the courageous FIRE communitythe leadership team, faculty and staff, the incredible army of students and grads, and to our community as a whole. The best is yet to come! Bless you all for not losing the vision. Bless you for believing the dream. And to Nancy, the joy of my life and my precious bride of more than 36 yearsI would not have made it this far without you.

On with the revolution! Jesus, lead the way!

Revolution is one of the looser words. The great French Revolution, the American Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, a revolution in Haiti, a social revolution, the American Negro Revolution, a revolution in our thinking, or in the ladies garment trade, or in the automotive industrythe list could be almost endless.

Crane Brinton, The Anatomy of Revolution

( first edition published 1938 )

If all possible meanings of the term revolution were to be encompassed within a short definition, then perhaps three words would suffice: sweeping dramatic change.

Jaroslav Krej, Great Revolutions Compared

We must become the change we envision.

Mahatma Gandhi, quoted in

Revolution: Faces of Change

Join the evolution.

RadioShack Corporation,

2000 Annual Report, front cover

The ad was striking, taking up the entire back page of the sports section of USA Today, June 26, 2000 . A major company had made some exciting new changes, changes so bold and radical only one word could adequately describe the enormity of it all. That word ran the entire width of the page and was printed in four colors: blue, yellow, red and green. That word, of course, was revolution. A Zest soap revolution! A revolution in the shower! That is exactly how the ad expressed it:

Four new colors & fragrances. Twice the lather of soap. Twice the fun. Its a refreshingly different kind of clean.

NEW ZEST BODY WASH. ZESTFULLY CLEAN. REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT.

A body wash revolution? But this is a sign of the times. Revolution is everywhere, and everything is revolutionary. There is a mattress revolutiona whole new way to sleepand a groundbreaking Revolution protein bar, not to mention the inventive Revolution hosta plant for your garden.

Even more daring and trend-setting is the innovative dog food brand named Revolution. Yes, it is true. Today your pooch can munch on Revolution dog food while you dine on Revolution protein bars. And when you lose interest in the protein bars, you can cook up your favorite cuisine in the Revolution line of pots and pans!

The revolution continues.

We are in the grip of a technology revolution, a PC revolution, a wireless revolution, a banking revolution, a cell phone revolution, a learning revolution, an e-book revolution and even a childless revolution.

If that bores you, check out the Game Revolution web site ( This is a time of large-scale paradigm shifts!

In the business sector in particular, revolutionary terminology is rampant. Best-selling books published in the year 2000 alone include Guy Kawasakis Rules for Revolutionaries: The Capitalist Manifesto for Creating and Marketing New Products and Services and Gary Hamels Leading the Revolution , a volume with a very focused plan of attack: I. Facing Up to the Revolution; II. Finding the Revolution; III. Igniting the Revolution; IV. Sustaining the Revolution. (Remember that he is speaking of a business revolution.)

The handwriting is on the wall. This is a season of wide-scale, radical change, even if the word
