In the aftermath of the waves of discipleship programs that have swept over the church in the last 30 years, clergy, and laypersons alike are more confused than ever about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. What should a disciple of Jesus look and act like today? What is the relationship between discipleship and salvation, between discipleship and sanctification, between discipleship and ministry? How were disciples of Jesus different from other disciples in the ancient world? How did the early church carry out Jesus agenda in making disciples of all the nations? In Following the Master, Michael J. Wilkins addresses these and many other questions that perplex the church today- not by offering another discipleship program or manual but by presenting a comprehensive biblical theology of discipleship. Following the Master compares other forms of master-disciple relationships in existence in the ancient Judaism and Greco-Roman world, traces Jesus steps as he called and developed disciples, and Mediterranean world as it followed Jesus command to make disciples. Following the Master lays the groundwork necessary for developing biblical discipleship ministries in the church, on the mission field, and in parachurch ministries. It is essential reading for all pastors, students, and Christian workers.

When I began to follow Jesus Christ as my Savior and God over twenty years ago, I entered onto a path that has led naturally to the writing of this book. Jesus Christ has been my closest companion during these years. He has also been the subject of my academic study and the focus of my teaching and pastoral ministries. What I have tried to do in this book is share the fruit of my academic, professional, and personal walk with Jesus. Hence, this is a book on discipleship.

But I have not travelled alone. Many people have assisted me and helped me clarify my understanding of the biblical data and the practical implications. I have discussed these issues at length in a variety of classes, training seminars, retreats and conferences. Each has impacted me. In particular, my undergraduate students at Biola University and my graduate students at Talbot School of Theology have stimulated my thinking through research papers, classroom interaction, and individual discussion. Thank-you all for a lively fifteen years! Special appreciation is given to those students in the fall semester, 1990, who carried out research projects on specialized topics for the advanced seminars on biblical discipleship. Thanks also to those students in New Testament Literature, Fall, 1991, who helped compile the indexes. Special thanks to Gary Stratton for his contributions to the interaction questions for each chapter.
