Question: What is the God-given purpose of the local church?

Answer: Relational discipleship.

DiscipleShift walks you through five key shifts that churches must make to refocus on the fundamental biblical mission of discipleship. These intentional changes will attract the world and empower your church members to be salt and light in their communities.

Over the last thirty years, many influential church leaders and church planters in America have adopted various models for reaching unchurched people. While many of these approaches have merit, something is still missing, something even more fundamental to the mission of the church: discipleship.

Making discipleshelping people to trust and follow Jesusis the churchs God-given mandate. Devoted disciples attract people outside the church because of the change others see in their Christ-like lives. And discipleship empowers Christians to be more like Christ as they intentionally develop relationships with non-believers.

Through biblical and professional insights, Jim Putman and Bobby Harrington discuss the transformational effectiveness of making disciples and just how to do so, in practical terms. Youll learn:

  • The specific roles of a disciple-making pastor.
  • The components of person-to-person discipleship.
  • How each ministry in your church leads to discipleship.
  • How to implement discipleship in your church.
  • Disciple-making leaders will not produce perfect churches, but they will create effective churches.

    Jim

To my good friend David Sanders, and my wife and children

    Bobby

Jim Putman and Bobby Harrington not only will remind you of the importance of the Great Commission but also will spur you on to make lasting change in your ministry. If you want to realign the values of your church so that discipleship is at the core, read this book.

Greg Surratt, Lead Pastor, Seacoast Church; author, Ir-Rev-Rend

This book is good stuff. Bobby and Jim have long believed that the effectiveness of the churchs mission depends largely on its capacity to make disciples. In DiscipleShift they say why they think that this is the case as well as show us how to make the shift. I recommend this book to everyone seeking to make discipleship a big deal in the local church.

Alan Hirsch, founder, Forge Mission Training Network

DiscipleShift is an incredible and practical resource for everyone serious about helping people follow Jesus. Jim and Bobby have generously shared what theyve learned from their combined total of more than fifty years of ministry both in planting churches and leading thriving ones. Im thrilled to see them share their experience in the area of discipleship. Leaders everywhere will do well to heed their advice.

Jud Wilhite, Senior Pastor, Central Christian Church

DiscipleShift brilliantly lays out the five shifts every church must make to develop more and better disciples of Jesus. Jim Putman has led Real Life Church to make these shifts and with great authenticity tell us how. If you are interested in disciple-making, this book is for you.

Dave Ferguson, Lead Pastor, Community Christian Church

Without discarding the church as it is, this book casts a beautiful vision for the church as it can be. Every church leader can grab hold of this vision and take their church through a disciple shift.

    Dave Stone, Pastor, Southeast Christian

It seems everyone in church leadership is talking about making disciples. Jim Putnam and Bobby Harrington are actually doing it. They have teamed up with the foremost champion of discipleship, Robert E. Coleman, who has dedicated his life to making disciple-makers. The authors provide the church with a gift of a biblically robust and well-researched explanation of making disciples, coupled with practical implications that can be applied in any church passionate about making disciple-makers.

Scott Thomas, Pastor of Ministry Development, The Journey; author, Gospel Coach

Something is missing in the life of the church. Todays institution has a polite form of religion, but it seems to lack power, the power to radically change the wayward course of society. This is not to say that nothing worthwhile is happening. In fact, all kinds of things are going on, and if success is measured by big meetings, big buildings, and big budgets, then the church appears to be doing quite well.

But the real question has to be asked: is all this business actually fulfilling the mandate of Christ to make disciples and teaching them, in turn, to do the same? Thats the mission of the church. Yes, we want churches to grow, but it is becoming painfully evident that getting more people on the rolls has not resulted in a corresponding increase in transformed lives. Where do you find the contagious sacrifice and all-out commitment to the Great Commission? In our obsession with bigger numbers of converts, far too little attention has been given to the nurture of believers in how to live their faith. This neglect has created a crisis in the contemporary church. How we deal with it, I believe, represents the most important issue we face today.
