Important Note
In reading this book, be very certain you never go past a word you do not fully understand. The only reason a person gives up a study or becomes confused or unable to learn is because he or she has gone past a word that was not understood.
The confusion or inability to grasp or learn comes AFTER a word the person did not have defined and understood. It may not only be the new and unusual words you have to look up. Some commonly used words can often be misdefined and so cause confusion.
This datum about not going past an undefined word is the most important fact in the whole subject of study. Every subject you have taken up and abandoned had its words which you failed to get defined.
Therefore, in studying this book be very, very certain you never go past a word you do not fully understand. If the material becomes confusing or you cant seem to grasp it, there will be a word just earlier that you have not understood. Dont go any further, but go back to BEFORE you got into trouble, find the misunderstood word and get it defined.
Glossary
To aid reader comprehension, L. Ron Hubbard directed the editors to provide a glossary. This is included in the Appendix, Editors Glossary of Words, Terms and Phrases. Words sometimes have several meanings. The Editors Glossary only contains the definitions of words as they are used in this text. Other definitions can be found in standard language or Dianetics and Scientology dictionaries.
If you find any other words you do not know, look them up in a good dictionary.

Introduction
Who are you anyway? Where do you come from? What will happen to you? Are you a product of the mind as you have been told, to exist for a few years and then wither away and fertilize the earth from which they said you came? Or are you something better, something finer?
What are your goals? Where are you going? Why are you here? What are you? Scientology has answers to these questions, good answers that are true, answers that work for you. For the subject matter of Scientology is you.

Is It Possible
to Be Happy?
Is it possible to be happy?
A great many people wonder whether or not happiness even exists in this modem, rushing world. Very often an individual can have a million dollars, he can have everything his heart apparently desires and is still unhappy. We take the case of somebody who has worked all his life. Hes worked hard. Hes raised a big family.
Hes looked forward to that time of his life when he, at last, could retire and be happy and be cheerful and have lots of time to do all the things he wanted to do. And then we see him after hes retired and is he happy? No. Hes sitting there thinking about the good old days when he was working hard.
Our main problem in life is happiness.
The world today mayor may not be designed to be a happy world. It may or may not be possible for you to be happy in this world. And yet, nearly all of us have the goal of being happy and cheerful about existence.
And then, very often, we look around at the world around us and say, Well, nobody could be happy in this place. We look at the dirty dishes in the sink and the car needing a coat of paint and the fact that we need a new gas heater, we need a new coat, we need new shoes or wed just like to have better shoes, and say, Well, how could anybody possibly be happy when, actually, he cant have everything he wants? Hes unable to do all the things hed like to do and, therefore, this environment doesnt permit a person to be as happy as he could be.
Well, Ill tell you a funny thing. A lot of philosophers have said this many, many times, but the truth of the matter is that all the happiness you will ever find lies in you.
You remember when you were maybe five years old and you went out in the morning and you looked at the dayand it was a very, very beautiful day. You looked at flowers and they were very beautiful flowers. Twenty-five years later, you get up in the morning, you take a look at the flowersthey are wilted. The day
