One thing that Ive noticed growing up in the church is that we are often taught certain properties of the Bible, but not taught how to actually read it. Mike Bird is a gift to the church in that he is an experienced biblical scholar who can distill complex matters into something understandable, even enjoyable. If you want to grow in your competence of reading Scripture and have a crackalackin good time doing it, read this book!

Before you can talk about what the Bible says on this and that, it is important to process what the Bible is. Bird offers clarity and insight on big issues of inspiration, canon, and how to read the Bible wiselyall in a short seven chapters. I wish I had this book when I was first learning how to study the Bible.

In an age where the ordinary Christian no longer knows who Josephus is, why reading literally could end in errors, or how the Bible was even put together, the struggle to help Christians understand the basics about the Bible is real. Finally, a book I can simply hand to fellow Christians and say, Read this! Bird humorously tackles the most common gaps and misunderstandings among Christians in a way the average person can understand: the nature of texts, good interpretation, the role of history, and how Scripture works within the Christian community. This would make a great book for a small group or families at home. Hear Bird now and thank him later.

Holy Smokes! This sounds like a clich, but this is absolutely truethis is a book every Christian or person exploring Christianity should (Id rather say must) read. The reason is that knowing the true Jesus comes from what we read in the Bible. However, there are so many misunderstandings of what the Bible is or isnt that can lead to poor understandings of Jesus and what it means to follow him. I dont say this lightly, but reading what Mike has written in this book helps us have a rebirthing of how we view and understand the Bible. I urge anyonefrom non-Christian to mature Christianto read this book, as you will never view or think of the Bible in the same way again.

CONTENTS
Seven Things I Wish Every Christian Knew about the Bible is about the Bible for Bible-believers. It is the result of twenty years of wrestling with Scripture, explaining where it came from, how to interpret it, how to engage with its difficult parts, how to love it, and how to obey it. In this book, I want to share with you what Ive learned about the Bible (amazing things!) and what Ive learned about people who read the Bible (sometimes weird and scary things!). The Bible says a lot of things and people say a lot of things about the Bible. But the things that people sometimes say about the Bible are not always true or even helpful. As such, what I want to do in this slender volume is explain how to think about the Bible and how to get the most out of your Bible. Im doing this because the Bible is an important book; in fact, in my mind, it is the most important book in the world. The Holy Bible is nothing less than Gods message to us, so we need to have a solid grasp of what it really is, where it came from, and what we are to do with it. By the end I hope to change the way you think about the Bible, transform the way you handle the Bible, and inspire you to enjoy the Bible like never before.
I wrote Seven Things I Wish Every Christian Knew about the Bible because if youre a Christian, then these are things that you really, really, really need to know! I would go so far as to say that if everyone knew these seven things, if pastors preached about them, if adult Sunday school classes and small groups taught them, then we would not have quite so many of the problems with the Bible in our churches as we do today. Now, you could go to seminary to learn about the Bible in more depth, but the reality is that not everyone has that calling or even the time to dedicate years of their life to biblical study. But as one who has been into the ivory tower of biblical scholarship, Ive picked up a thing or two which are worth sharing with Christians who treasure the Bible and want to know the Bible better. If biblical scholarship is a bit like a foreign land, then I want to be your tour guide and interpreter. I want to show you how the insights of biblical scholarship can answer some of your questions about the Bible, enhance your experience of the Bible, and sharpen your understanding of the Bible. This journey into the Bible, I hope, will equip and encourage every Christian to talk about the Bible with confidence and credibility, to handle it responsibly, to wrestle with it earnestly, and to obey it faithfully.
