Teachers Are Terrific
Her stories are so ridiculous, that a non-educator might actually believe theyre fabricated. Unfortunately, those of us who are on the inside know its all too real. Her stories are laugh out loud funny, touching, and at times, maddening.

This book is a great read and a real eye-opener.
Carpe Librum
Morris is a great writer who did a great job presenting her case. She is funny and entertaining. She is above all honest with her interpretation and the things that she sees around her. I liked the variation in text and material. Overall, these books need to be spread around the country. She isnt the only person that feels this way. There are thousands of other people out there like her and their voices need to be heard.

PREFACE
When I first started teaching over a decade ago, I immediately thought, Yeah, theres no way I can do this. It was completely different from my experience as a student, and as an intern. My secondary education studies in no way prepared me for it. I thought, Just make it through this year and youll figure something out.
As that year got more and more challenging, I started to collect materials. I grabbed a folder and wrote, No one will believe this bullshit on it and started stuffing it full of absurd artifacts from all aspects of my job. If a kid sent a rude email, I printed it out and stuck it in the folder. If an administrator gave me a bullshit evaluation based on arbitrary things such as blinds not pulled up evenly, I made a photocopy and in it went. I wasnt sure why I was documenting everything. I just knew that if I didnt, no one would believe what I was experiencing and it needed to be shared.
As the year continued, my experiences were so outrageously awful that even veteran teachers admitted that I got more shit in my first year than they had experienced in their whole careers. I started to think that I was a bullshit magnet, or just a really shitty teacher.
Now I know better.
Those teachers hadnt had all of those experiences because teaching didnt become as awful as it is now until recently. Now, when veteran teachers read my book, they recognize how much their chosen career has changed, and figure out how to retire early.
Just make it through this year. You cant be the kind of person who quits in the middle of the year. Youre stronger than that, I told myself. And then the same administrator who commented on my blinds, and later advised me to treat kids like sacks of shit, invited me into her office. She offered the following wisdom: You know, I just want to commend you. Most people in their first year of teaching who have experienced half of the difficult situations that you have would have quit by now. Honestly, Im really surprised that you havent quit yet!
That changed something in me.
I always knew I would be a teacher. I almost couldnt escape it, though I tried. I had different majors in college, and refused to acknowledge what I knew to be true: teaching was in my blood. I couldnt let these fuckers break me. Youre surprised that I havent quit yet? Well, keep watching! I thought. Not only am I going to stay, Im going to get really good at this!
