How do religious texts impact the way communities of faith understand themselves? In The World of Jesus and the Early Church: Identity and Interpretation in Early Communities of Faith Craig Evans leads an interdisciplinary team of scholars to discover and explain how the dynamic relationship between text and community enabled ancient Christian and Jewish communities to define themselves. To this end, scholars composed two sets of essays. The first examines how communities understood and defined themselves, and the second looks at how sacred texts informed communities about their own self-understanding and identity in earliest stages of Christianity and late Second Temple Judaism.
Whether revealing new understandings of Jesus before Pilate, the rituals governing the execution and burial of criminals, or the problems of dating ancient manuscripts, The World of Jesus and the Early Church draws the reader into the world of the early Christian and Jewish communities in fresh and insightful ways.

PREFACE

The World of Jesus and the Early Church gradually emerged from a series of scholarly conferences and symposia. One was held at Acadia Divinity College of Acadia University, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada. Two others were held at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. The editor is grateful to the Hayward Lectures endowment that supported the conference at Acadia and to Mr. G. Richard Hastings, whose generosity made possible the founding of The Hastings Institute for the Study of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Christian Origins, which in turn supported the conferences on the campus of Midwestern. Thanks are also due President Harry Gardner of Acadia Divinity College and President R. Philip Roberts of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, whose vision and commitment to scholarship make scholarly conferences possible, productive, and very enjoyable. The editor is also grateful to Mr. Jeremy Johnston, who is currently pursuing his doctorate in biblical studies, for compiling the indexes. And finally, on behalf of the contributors, the editor dedicates our studies to the memory of Douglas Edwards, who died in November 2008. At the conference held at Acadia, Doug presented two stimulating papers on village life in Galilee. He is missed.
