For opening my life
to the full breadth of adventure.
Generally, the person whos invited to write a books Foreword is responsible for endorsing its author, supporting its message, and suggesting that the reader consider a particular perspective as it relates to the work. I can do all three without hesitation and with great enthusiasm.
First, its easy to endorse the books author. I have known him for four years, and with each subsequent interaction, I continue to be impressed with his character and how much I learn from him. When our relationship began, I was Matthews teacher, and he was my student. In short order, however, our roles reversed. Dont get me wrong. Matthew is a lifelong learner and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to every conversation. However, I cant help but walk away from our interactions with a new perspective and a bigger vision of what is possiblenot only for myself, but for the world in which we live.
Second, its easy to support the substance of this book because it is rich and compelling, meaningful and insightful, honest and straightforward. Having explored and climbed the farthest reaches of the earth, Matthew brings his years of mountaineering experience to everyday life. He encourages you to think bigger about who you are, how you spend your time, and what you offer the world. With gripping stories of adventure and courage, he demonstrates the intrinsic value of appreciating every minute, stepping out of your routine, and embracing adventure in all aspects of your life: relationships, work, play, and more.
Third, as you read Adventure in Everything, I suggest you consider that thinking bigger about who you are and what you offer the world is not just a path toward personal and professional success, but also toward personal and professional alignment. You need never climb Mount Everest. (Its the last thing Id be interested in doing.) But instead define for yourself what it means to think bigger about who you are and what you can offer. What does it mean to you to find more adventure in your everyday life?
As attractive as it may be to imagine that you can determine what the future will look like, its just not possible. The future is uncertain. But if you embrace the philosophy that life is an adventure worth embracing, you will not simply focus on the number of days you have left or the quantity of activities you can pack into a day, but on the quality of each day you are lucky enough to live. If you do, you will find meaningful, fulfilling, and maybe even thrilling adventure in pursuing your dreams, expressing your values, and living your life.
Go for it. And remember to always think big (no, bigger than that)!
Michael Port,
the New York Times best-selling author of four books,
including The Think Big Manifesto
What if every day when you woke up you couldnt wait to start your job? What if you spent your morning commute reflecting on all of the cool things you did the previous weekend, including trying out a new activity with your family or going on an incredible hike? What if your workday consisted of doing something you loved so much that you couldnt even believe someone wanted to pay you to do it, and when you got home, you had all the energy you needed to walk around the living room with your kids clinging to your legs and then to still be able to read them their favorite book for the 47th time when they were finally ready to go to sleep? What if you went to bed with your significant other while reflecting on all of the great things you were going to share throughout the rest of the week?
