GETTING STARTED
IN STUDYING THE BIBLE
Y ou have only ten minutes before you head for the kitchen in the morning. After that youre off to work, come home tired at the end of the day, fix supper for your family or think about getting through the file in your briefcase, and then fall exhausted into bed. Your conscience nags at you a bit, and you really want to pick up your Bible and spend a few minutes in the Word. Can I really get anything out of this in just ten minutes? you ask yourself as you debate even bothering to pick up your Bible. The following guidelines will help you get started:
Guideline 1: Concentration
As you sit down and let your Bible fall open, your first battle is with your thoughts that flood your mind and wage war with your concentration. Shut out the rest of the day and the tyranny of pressing obligations to the extent that you can and focus on what you are reading. Then, expect God to speak to you. The depth of your encounter with the Wordconnecting with Gods direction and will for your dayis far more important than how many chapters or pages your eyes quickly scan without comprehending what you are reading.
Guideline 2: Observation
You need to observe what you are reading and understand it to profit from it, right? I am amazed at times that I can read a page, close the book and not remember one thing that I read. Like the seed that falls on the wayside, the vultures of my schedule have plucked it out of my memory. My mind has been racing on to the days agenda or the problems Im dealing with instead of concentrating on those moments with the Word.
A one-volume commentary such as Wycliffes Bible Commentary or Halleys Bible Handbook provides concise, focused help. Today there are many study Bibles with reference notes that are helpful and illuminatingwell worth the additional cost. If the Bible is new to you, I suggest that you start with the gospel of John, and then go on to the book of Acts, to get a comprehensive grasp of the whole. No matter what you do, however, do not ignore the Old Testament, which is the cradle of the New, and is all part and parcel of the book.
Guideline 3: Interpretation
What does it mean? Generally, the clearest, simplest interpretation is the correct one. Some would have you to think that only those with great spiritual insights can interpret the Bible. When I hear someone trying to convince an audience that he has insights which others have not been spiritual enough to gain, I usually catalog the speaker as a sensationalist. God did not give his Word to PhD holders but to common, ordinary people, and common, ordinary meanings are usually right on target.
Guideline 4: Application
How do I apply this great truth to my life? Most of what the Bible says is pretty much plain vanilla. Gods purpose in giving us this magnificent book is to help us know how to live. Right living, Gods plan, his blueprintall of these are revealed in the Bible. As you apply to your life what you read each day, the Bible will become a living book to you.
