Unique among most debates on homosexuality, this book presents a constructive dialogue between people who disagree on significant ethical and theological matters, and yet maintain a respectful and humanizing posture toward one another.

Few topics are more divisive today than homosexuality. Two Views on Homosexuality, the Bible, and the Church brings a fresh perspective to a well-worn debate. While Christian debates about homosexuality are most often dominated by biblical exegesis, this book seeks to give much-needed attention to the rich history of received Christian tradition, bringing the Bible into conversation with historical and systematic theology.

To that end, both theologians and biblical scholarswell accomplished in their fields and conversant in issues of sexuality and genderarticulate and defend each of the two views:

  • Affirming represented by William Loader and Megan K. DeFranza
  • Traditional represented by Wesley Hill and Stephen R. Holmes
  • The main essays are followed by insightful responses that interact with their fellow essayists with civility. Holding to a high view of Scripture, a commitment to the gospel and the church, and a love for peopleespecially those most affected by this topicthe contributors wrestle deeply with the Bible and theology, especially the prohibition texts, the role of procreation, gender complementarity, and pastoral accommodation.

The book concludes with reflections from general editor Preston Sprinkle on the future of discussions on faith and sexuality.

The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

F ew topics have become as volatile, confusing, and debated in contemporary religious and political discourse as homosexuality. The sanctity of same-sex relations is one of the most pressing ethical questions facing the church today. Unlike other topics that Christians debatethe rapture, the millennium, speaking in tongues, etc.homosexuality affects the very core of human persons. It is, as I have stated elsewhere, not just an issue to be debated, but touches the heart and humanity of real people.

Homosexuality is not just an issue, because people are not mere issues. But it does include issuesseveral issues in fact. Issues informed by Bible passages and doctrines and biblical-theological themes related to human nature, marriage, gender, and sexuality. A full-bodied understanding of homosexuality demands that we dig into the ancient Near Eastern and Greco-Roman context of the Bible, study the perspective on same-sex relations in Judaism and early Christianity, and consult recent works in psychology, sociology, and biology. Homosexuality also involves listening. Listening to and entering into the lives of real gay, lesbian, and bisexual people.

When I began my own study of the topic, I cracked open dozens of books and hundreds of articles and began inching my way through what seemed like an insurmountable pile of research. I learned a lot about Hebrew and Greek words, a biblical view of sexuality, complications about a biblical view of sexuality, church history, sexuality in ancient Mesopotamia, and that body of ancient pornography otherwise known as Roman poetry. But it wasnt until I got to know and love gay and lesbian people that I started to understand the topic of homosexuality.
