IVE BEEN MINISTERING in prison a lot the past two years. I walk through a maze of steel gates to join nearly two hundred inmates in East Jersey State Prison for a night of worship and prayer. Ive rarely experienced anything like it outside those walls. Its a foretaste ofalmost a feast ofwhat Francis Frangipane calls the days of His (Christs) presence.
In fact, the kind of vision this book explores has become a permanent focus of my preaching at their meetings. A year ago I taught them a four-line poem that captures much of what Francis shares with us in this compelling read. It is our hope for the prison. We recite it in unison. It goes like this:
Christ is risen in the prison.
He calls among the walls.
He dwells in the cells.
Hes the One you see at EJSP!
To draw from Franciss title for part four of his book, for those men Christs visitation is turning into His habitation. But this is merely a preview of coming attractions for the whole body of Christ.
Francis and I have reached the same conclusion about this hour of history. But we got there by different routesserving in different streams of the church, out of different dreams and visions, working in different arenas of ministry, with different roles and gifts. From time to time we even use different terminologies to describe what we see coming. Meaning the same as Franciss days of His presence, I often talk about a Christ awakening movement, or a reconversion back to Christ for ALL He is, or intimacy with Christ in His supremacy.
But our passions and expectations are exactly the same. Let me show you.
For example, out of forty years traveling the global church, preaching on the supremacy of Christ from Scripture and summoning Gods people to seek days of His presence in concerted prayer, I could not agree more with Francis when he writes in chapter 2, At the end of the age, the world will see the Lord Jesus Christ leading His church in ever-increasing displays of glory.
Or again, in chapter 4: As important as the harvest is, however, the primary focus of the vision was not winning the lost; it was on the ascendancy of Christs presence in the church.
Or, as one more example, from chapter 20: Today the Holy Spirit is surgically removing from us that which seeks to control the Son of God.... If we want our Christianity to truly have Christ, we must let Him rule.
For one thing, Francis and I stand together on the shoulders of great saints who have helped us embrace our shared hope.
Take, for instance, the Puritans. They reasoned like this: Christs presence assumes three dimensions. There is His essential presenceHe is everywhere present, filling the universe with His reign. There is His cultivated presenceas we abide in Him and He abides in us, like vine and branches, we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Redeemer.
However, the Puritans taught that there are special seasons when God sovereignly moves by His Spirit to magnify His Son in extraordinary ways, for which we can take no credit. They called this third dimension the manifest presence of Christ. Think of a curtain pulled back at the start of a drama, revealing the people and props waiting to begin. On the stage all along, now they become visible. Now they are manifested. Now they can go into action making the theater really come alive. Spiritually speaking, the same phenomenon can happen to Christians, whether in one church or in a whole generation: Gods people experience exhilaration and acceleration anytime Christ chooses to pull back the curtain (as it were) and manifest Himself to us in wonderful new ways. He ushers us into what I call a Christ awakening.
No doubt about it, our separate ministry journeys bring Francis and me to the same conviction, the one exquisitely described in this volume. Both of us anticipate that, in the last times, there will come forth among Gods people a fresh, Spirit-given demonstration of the supremacy, majesty, and triumphant activity of our ascended Jesus. We also believe the days are at hand when Gods Son will arise to become the dominating focus among Earths peoples. The world will wake up to Him, like never before, as the King of the universe, Lord of nations, Ruler of rulers, Sovereign of history, Savior of sinners, Head Foreword xi of the church, Master of the redeemedand the sum total of Gods everlasting kingdom.
Together we await nothing less than what Francis describes as the days of His presence!
In thirty absorbing chapters this book details what Dr. Ebenezer Porter distilled into
