21. Becoming the Answer to Christs Prayer

The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever (see Hebrews 13:8). Just as He prayed that His early disciples would become one, so He also prayed for unity among His people today. Remember His prayer? He said, I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one (John 17:2021).

It is obvious that Jesus Christ passionately desires His people to be healed of the effects of splits and divisions. Indeed, the more I come to know the Lords heart, the more I am convinced that disunity among the people of God is the work of hell. The curse of division has gone on long enough.

Thus, my deepest desire is to exalt the power and blessedness of Christ-centered unity. My goal, therefore, is to help shepherds and their flocks secure Christlikeness in their church relationships. If we find this holy, wonderful place, we also will discover that Gods house is truly the gate of heaven (see Genesis 28:17).

Ending Division

I began this work focused on ending divisions and church splits among born-again Christians. There may be other books available on this subject, but I had not found any. Thus, to help me prioritize what I would put in this work, we asked those who receive our weekly email teaching to comment on the issue of church splits. Most of the responses I received were passionate and heartrending.

Approximately 60 percent of those who responded expressed a deep and ongoing grief because of what they had suffered in a church split. Of these, about 25 percent wrote long and painful responses, the majority describing how a discontented group within their congregation had divided and split what once was a loving church. A few of these emails were so painful they brought tears to my eyes. Within this group, the most common adjective used to describe the experience was the word devastating.

Quite a few said they had been through more than one split. Others were children when they experienced the division and described their extreme difficulty in returning to Christianity as adults. About 10 percent were cynical and critical. Their concern was that this might be another book justifying what they called the abuse of authority. They expressed that their church divided because of the pastors sin. They also complained that the lack of accountability in a few nondenominational churches let pastors become so authoritarian that the only spiritual thing left to do was to rebel and start a new assembly. Citing the Protestant reformers, a handful within this group felt the greatest Christians the Church has ever produced were those who confronted ungodly leaders.

A number of people presented complex situations that led to their church splitting. Others simply wanted to know what could be done to find healing, as the wounds of a split remained open within their hearts.

Obviously no one book could answer all these questions. Even if I tried, I do not think I would have the right answers to each of these situations. So I have sought to address the most common issues: the splits that are born of ambition in a subordinate pastor or worship leader, and the splits where the pastor himself divides the church or falls into serious sin. My goal is to help heal the hearts of pastors and congregations alike. I also desire to set some standards, or Kingdom ethics, to help avoid this heartache in the future.

For those who are fearful that I am seeking to unite everyone who calls himself or herself Christian, I want to clarify that my appeal is to the born-again Church. Some of you are involved in trying to reconcile your role in denominational churches where the leaders are sanctioning homosexuality and other sins. Should you leave? This question is answered in the appendix at the back of the book, but addressing this subject in length is not my primary objective. My readers are primarily people who desire to become more Christlike. If you are reading this but do not desire to become like Jesus, you probably will not get far within these pages.

One last thing: If you are in the midst of a serious church division, I suggest you review the table of contents and start this book with the chapters that are most relevant to your current situation. Of course, you should return to the unread chapters, but it may be important for you to first assimilate the information that addresses your immediate conflict.

I realize that what I have presented here is quite inadequate. But let us unite in prayer, trusting God that He, in His grace, will raise up others to join this effort to end church splits and divisions. Lets take faith that, within our generation, we will see Christs Church united and Gods people healed of this curse of division and splits.
