CHAPTER 1- WHAT IS STRESS?
With the daily hustle and bustle that we have to deal with, we may find that we do not have the time to deal with ourselves and take the time out to relax and just enjoy life. With all the life challenges and obstacles, we may think that we can no longer go through the day and the pressure is just too hard to handle, making us feel like we just want to give up and in cases like these, what we may be feeling is too much stress for our mind and body.
We often hear the word stress or being stressed out and pressured but really, what is stress? What may be the real definition of it for us; to really understand what stress can do to our bodies and our minds often indicates that it affects our lives. If you are wondering about what stress is all about and what we can do to help avoid it, here is the real definition of the term to help us understand what stress is really all about.
The Real Definition
If you are thinking, what is stress? the real definition of the term is that it is a physiological and psychological response to events that upset our personal balance in some way. These events or demands are known as stressors that lead us to feeling pressured and tensed. For some people, stressors may seem to be something that is bad and should be avoided, but with proper dosage, these stressors can be turned into something productive and may lead us to focus more and develop our concentration when doing our jobs.
By knowing the answer to the question, what is stress? we will immediately know that we should then do some things to help us manage it and turn it into something that will be productive and bring out the competitive nature inside of us. But regardless of what kind of stress we are going through, if our mind and body feels like it can no longer adjust and has had too much of it, it would be best for us to take a breather and just sit back and relax.
If we already know the answer to the question, what is stress? and understand its positive and negative effects on us, it would be best to take action and do the necessary steps to make us feel relaxed and at the same time convert that energy into a positive.
Effective Stress Management
Many of us search for ways to get rid of stress and its related symptoms. Here are some ways of effective stress management. The first step towards effective stress management is to recognize what exactly is causing stress, i.e. the stressors. Once you find out the hidden stressors, you can begin the process of dealing with them. You should also observe the changes that take place in you when you suffer from stress. These may be physical stressors affecting your body or other stressors that attack your mental peace and strength. You can also find out the way you react to situations when you suffer from stress.
In order to do away with stress you must also find out if you can avoid certain situations that cause stress in you. When you become aware of the things that cause stress, you can make a deliberate attempt and stay away from those situations. If it is not possible for you to steer away from such circumstances then you can at least try to decrease the amount of stress and your participation in the activities that cause stress.
At times, we give undue importance to stressors. It is necessary to understand that not all of the stressors require your attention, time or energy and sometimes ignorance can be sheer bliss. When you digest this fact, stress management becomes easier. Sometimes stress triggers certain emotions and feelings which force you to crib and complain. You should learn to control your emotions and treat stress as a very weak feeling that can be overpowered easily.
Stress also leads to physical responses that may also take an ugly turn and become violent at times. Effective stress management also includes controlling these physical responses. You should also take proper medicines, get enough rest and indulge in exercises that help in reducing the stress levels.
Most times stress is caused due to false expectations and we fail to understand our limitations. It is necessary that you evaluate yourself and come to terms with your capacities. This will steer away most worries, tensions, and will always keep you happy and smiling. Effective stress management is of no use if you keep on having false beliefs about yourself.
In the upcoming chapter you will learn more about stress and how to identify the signs of stress in yourself or someone else.
CHAPTER 2- THE WARNING SIGNS OF STRESS
Stress does not knock your door before entering. Once it enters your life it makes your life very boring and sad. In order to cope with stress, you should always keep a check on the warning signs of stress; that would help you in dealing with stress effectively. These signs can be proof of the fact that you are suffering from either acute or chronic stress. These signs help you in taking accurate measures to get rid of stress.
One of the warning signs of stress is changes in appetite. If you find that you have lost a great amount of weight in a short time then maybe you are suffering from some kind of stress. Similarly, if you wake up one day and suddenly start eating more than your regular intake of food then you should check if you are stressed by any situation.
Another warning sign of stress is a constant feeling of anxiety and tiredness. If you feel that, you are facing too much work or suddenly feel drained out of all your energy after the days work you may be suffering from stress. This may also lead to changes in the sleeping patterns. You may experience loss of sleep or need more sleep.
