Join pastor and bestselling author Charles Swindoll as he explores the stories of 13 biblical hidden figures whose lives have remained in the shadows of history for long enough.

Somehow life has taught us poorly. Were trained to think that the most significant people are star athletes, actors, and musiciansthe ones we applaud, those whose autographs we seek, or those who have worldly fame.

But Swindoll teaches us that most often, the people really worth noting are those who turn from a nobody into a somebody but never receive credit. Fascinating Stories from Forgotten Lives reminds us of a core truth: success in Gods kingdom and in the church depends upon faithful people the public rarely knows.

The Old Testament contains numerous fascinating stories of forgotten livesunsung heroes whose actions, sacrifices, or battles failed to ascribe them worldly applause. These great lives, however, reveal significant people whom God honors in the pages of His Word and, therefore, deserve our serious attention and emulation.

From the misfortunes of Esau to the bravery of Abigail, each of these unlikely heroes has four unique elements in common:

  • A selfless sense of devotion
  • A mission
  • A love of harmony
  • A contagious joy
  • Join Swindoll in this eighth volume of the bestselling Great Lives from Gods Word series as he examines little-remembered Bible characters and events, helping you discover biblical principles and practical applications for living so that you can be who you already are in Gods eyesa person of true significance.

    D EDICATION

    It is with great gratitude
that I dedicate this volume to

    The Ramer Brothers
    J OHN , D ANNY , AND L UKE

along with three of their sons
    A NDREW , J USTIN , AND J OHN.

These men represent a strong work ethic, commitment to excellence,
skill in craftsmanship, attention to detail, and outstanding attitudes...
qualities that are virtually unheard of in our day of
    hurried and mediocre workmanship.

They not only built our new home, they built it right.
And they took great pleasure in doing so
because they did it for the glory of God.

    I NTRODUCTION
    Fascinating Stories of Forgotten Lives

F rom my earliest years I have admired people who live their lives in the shadows. They often feel the pressure of much responsibility, yet they bear up under it without seeking to be noticed. They do great work, thanks to their God-given skills and seasoned experience. Many fill significant roles and contribute greatly to the accomplishment of important tasks, all the while remaining virtually anonymous. Without applause and usually without public awareness, these faithful men and women press on, knowing that their names will never be in lights. To be honest about it, they would feel uncomfortable if they were. All that attention and acknowledgment makes them nervous. They dont do what they do to be noticed or to call attention to themselves; they do it because its their role to fill; better stated, its their calling. Quietly and efficiently, they serve and give of themselves. The world is a better place because of them.
