To my son Alexander Searcy I love you very much At the time of this writing - photo 2

To my son, Alexander Searcy: I love you very much. At the time of this writing, you are too young to know Jesus Christ personally, even though you are covered by his grace and I love to hear you pray, but I pray that as you mature you will place your faith and trust in Jesus at the earliest possible moment. No decision you make will be as important as this one. I pray for you every day.

contents

W ithin hours of becoming a Christian, I became passionate about evangelism. This book is one expression of that passion. My eternal gratitude is to Jesus Christ for calling me to salvation and later to ministry. While dozens if not hundreds of pastors have influenced my thinking on evangelism, two stand above the rest: Milton A. Hollifield, Jr., and Rick Warren. Thank you both for taking a chance on me when I was either way too young or way too inexperienced to accomplish the ministry assignments you gave me.

In addition I would like to especially thank the following pastors and church leaders for influencing my views and shaping my thoughts on church growth: Donald McGavran, Peter Wagner, Win and Charles Arn, Thom Rainer, Billy Graham, George Hunter, Carl George, and DeLos Miles. If the theology and applications in this book are correct, you can thank the pastors above. If there are mistakes, those are solely mine.

I must also express a huge thanks to my colleagues at The Journey Church, both past and present staff members. Since 2001 I have had the privilege of being the dumbest person on an extremely smart team. Kerrick Thomas, Jason Hatley, Sarah Wilson, and John Troy have especially shaped the thoughts in this book. To the current staff: I love doing church with you! To future staff: what are you waiting on? Step up to the plate and join me in the adventure of cooperating with God to influence New York City toward Jesus!

This is my first book with Baker but I hope not my last. My thanks to Chad Allen, Jack Kuhatschek, and all the fine folks at Baker Books who have made this book infinitely stronger than it was when I submitted the original manuscript. I must also acknowledge Bucky Rosenbaum of the Rosenbaum Agency for his early counsel in making this project possible.

Jennifer Dykes Henson has been a partner on my last four books. Her skills as a writer and editor are hard to overstate. I cannot say thank you enough! As members at The Journey, Jennifer and her husband Brian serve as models of all that I discuss in this book.

My sincere thanks to the coaching alumni who share their testimonies in this book. You help bring the principles alive and are a model for all who read this book.

Finally, I must thank the love of my life, Kelley. Im glad you showed up for our blind date back in 1992 (and our wedding date in 1994). Each day my love for you grows stronger. Thank you for your commitment to this book and your continual support. Alexander is lucky to have a mom like you, and Im proud to call you my wife.

Jennifer Dykes HensonTo my brother, Jimmy: thank you for the seeds of love and support you have sown into my life and for your constant example of evangelisms true heart. And to my grandfather, Joseph Edward Reeves: thank you for the legacy you ignited.

introduction
What If Your Church
Could Double in One Day?

J on and Liz got married right out of college. They were just kids, really, but they were in love. They couldnt wait to start life.

After the wedding, they bought a two-story home on the edge of town and leased a nicer car than either one of them had ever driven. Jon got a job as an assistant to the president of a local bank, and Liz went to work as a photographer, taking pictures for the community newspaper. Three years later, their daughter, Madison, made her debut. Then, a year and a half later, their son, Johnny, came along.

Jon and Liz looked like they had it made. They were living the dream. And they were happy... most of the time. Sure, they had their share of fits and fights, just like anyone else. And Jon did get a little overwhelmed trying to make ends meet each month. But that was normal, right?

They even went to church from time to time. Well, early on in their marriage they did. They hadnt been in a few years now. The weekends seemed to fly by, and Jon didnt see any real benefit in getting dressed up and spending his Sunday mornings in a pew. Liz mentioned wanting to go back every once in a while, but there always seemed to be a reason to put it off. Now that the kids were getting older, though, she thought about it more and more. She just didnt know how to convince Jon. It wasnt worth the fight.

But recently Jon had mentioned a guy in his office, Sam, who kept inviting him to go to a new church in town called FCC (Fictional Community Church). Jon didnt seem interested. Liz was kind of hopingokay, even prayingthat he would change his mind.

Dream with me for a moment. Let the following question roll around in your mind:

What if your church could double in one day?

I often tell my congregation that we can easily double on any given Sunday as long as one thing happens: everyone invites an unchurched friend! Just think about that. Your church could double next Sunday if everyone in your congregation got on board. You could immediately double your evangelistic effectiveness if everyone invited one unchurched friend to church.

The real conundrum about a church doubling in a day isnt how we do it but why it isnt happening every Sunday. Why is it that my church and your church can go months (or even years) without significant growth? Do we think thats what God wants? What if we could ignite an evangelistic revolution where evangelism happens every Sunday and churches double every year? Thats what this book is all about.

Over the next thirteen chapters, I will show you how you can:
