Preface to the Revised and Expanded Edition

The church-planting landscape has changed since the original edition of Launch: Starting a New Church from Scratch . More new churches are being started right now than ever before. Multi-site locations have become the new normal in many areas. A large percentage of church planters are being called to launch churches as a second career, after years of experience in another industry. These realities bring new nuances to the conversation.

As much as things have changed, however, even more remains the same. The core principles of the Launch strategy for starting a healthy church are as relevant todayif not more soas ever. Since its release, thousands of churches have used the original Launch: Starting a New Church from Scratch as their essential guidebook for launching healthy, thriving churches that continue to reach people for Jesus. Church leaders who have studied and implemented the truths in these pages continue to be ministry success stories, while those who forge ahead without a plan still fail at an astounding rate.

In this revised, updated, and expanded edition of Launch , you will have the opportunity to rediscover the well-tested and proven strategies for everything involved in your launch, from finding funding to conducting your first worship servicesand thats just the beginning. This expanded version is filled with new insights based on the positive experiences of churches all around the world that have used the Launch system to get started.

In the last few years, many church growth experts have observed this reality: churches that follow Launch principles to start a new church or a new campus are able to launch large and healthy congregations, while those that go it on their own have a much harder time getting started and sustaining healthy growth. In fact, the Launch system has become so ingrained in the culture of starting new churches that the terminology has largely shifted from planting churches to launching churches .

Partnering with God to launch healthy churches is significant work. My prayer is that as you dive into the pages aheadwhether you have used the Launch system before and are back for a refresher, whether you are a seasoned pastor ready to start a new campus, or whether you are just beginning the journey of launching your first church from scratchGod will speak to your heart and mind as you prepare for the awe-inspiring task he has set before you.

Authors Note: While the thoughts, anecdotes, and principles presented in these pages represent the contributions of both Nelson Searcy and Kerrick Thomas, weve chosen to fuse our combined experience into one voice for claritys sake. The voice in the pages ahead is Nelsons.

Preface to the First Edition

Starting a church is a heroic activity. Thank you for preparing for this calling. In addition to church planters, this book is ideal for:

  • The spouses and families of church planters
  • Those drawn to church planting but unsure of their calling
  • Those considering church planting as a second career
  • Current pastors ready to launch a new multi-site campus
  • Anyone considering joining a church-planting team
  • Seminary students interested in the launching of new churches
  • Professors looking for a relevant handbook for starting churches
  • Current church leaders who want to sponsor new churches
  • Mission leaders or volunteers who help launch new churches
  • Denominational leaders who encourage and support new churches
  • Anyone who has a heart for supporting new churches
  • Students of church growth
  • Anyone searching for fresh ideas on how to launch a healthy church

Although Launch was written primarily as a guide for lead pastors, the information ahead can be easily adapted for anyone interested in starting healthy churches. Consider using it as a tool for group study with other pastors, church planters, or church-planting teams.

Acknowledgments

Nelson: To Kelley, my wife and best friend. Thank you for taking a risk on our first blind date and for saying yes to the hundreds of risks since, including the call to start a new church from scratch. And to our son, Alexander. My love for both of you grows every day. Thank you to Kerrick and Jennifer for the opportunity to do this book together. May God use it for his glory.

Kerrick: To my wife and partner in ministry, Lorie, who was courageous enough to move with me to a tiny, mouse-infested, one-room New York City apartment in the East Village to try to start a church when a lot of people thought it wasnt a great idea. And to my mom, who thought it was a great idea all along.

Jennifer: Thanks, first and always, to God for allowing me to play a small part in helping leaders launch new churches for his glory. Thanks to Nelson and Kerrick: The magnitude of the work I am privileged to do alongside you continually humbles me. And thanks to my incredible husband, Brian, and our two precious girls: every day with you three is better than the last.

Nelson, Kerrick, and Jennifer would all like to thank the amazing staff, members, volunteers, and partners of The Journey Church. And thank you to the multitalented and committed team at Baker Books for their continued partnership and commitment to this book.
