The aim of this book is to make known to those who do not speak Georgian the Travels of Archbishop Timothy Gabashvili, The book was produced as the result of a contract between the K. Kekelidze Institute of Manuscripts of the Georgian Academy of Sciences in Tbilisi and John Wilkinson in London.

Work was begun at a time when the Republic of Georgia was in severe financial difficulties. We are thus extremely grateful to the Georgian Academy of Sciences and the British Academy, who have provided the fares and accommodation for John Wilkinson in his annual travels to Tbilisi. We are also most grateful to the Palestine Exploration Fund, the Open Society (Georgia), and the Israel branch of the Studies of Caucasian Christianity and the Holy Land, for financing and encouraging research in the Holy Land.

Academician Elene Metreveli edited Archbishop Timothy's account of his journey, under the title Travels, in 1956. Her work is excellent. She provides a reliable text, and accurately sets Timothy's life in the context of Georgian culture and history. Since most of the information in this book is the result of her labours, the editors have had constant cause to be grateful to her.

The breadth of her scholarship is far from being represented in this book.
