This book is about the world as seen through the principles of physics and how it impacted my spiritual journey. I was a mechanical engineer in my early 30s when a friend suggested I read the book In Search of Schrdingers Cat: Quantum Physics and Reality by John Gribbin. Reading this book rocked my world.

In search of Schrdingers Cat is about the history of physics and has nothing to do with God, but it took me on a path that led right to Gods doorstep. Reading about what scientists have learned about our worldin the twentieth century in particularbegan to change my understanding of reality and of God.

To become a mechanical engineer, I learned a lot in school about the physical sciences. Like many engineers, before I would believe something, I needed proof. And proof of the spiritual world is pretty hard to come by. There is no evidence that proves the existence of the spiritual world using internationally accepted scientific methods. There is, however, a lot of evidence pointing to a creator, and thats what this book is all about.

I grew up in the church and was exposed to the writings of the Bible many times. As a curious teenager, I read the entire New Testament and learned a great deal about what the Bible teaches. Based on my understanding of the physical world at the time, the Bible seemed crazy to me:

A man swallowed by a whale, living in his belly for days, and being spit out alive? Cmon, get real.

Demons being cast out of people? Sounds like ignorance of the psychological sciences .

Jesus raising people who had been dead for days? Exaggeration and folklore.

God knows everything at the same time. And he even knows what will happen in the future? How can that be possible?

Predestination and free will? How can both things be true when they are opposites?

It turns out that the Bible describes a person with a belief system like I had at that time:

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. (1 Corinthians 2:14)

And as crazy as these Biblical statements and stories seemed to me, I came to learn that they are no crazier than our physical universe.

The more I learned about physics, the more I learned that our world isnt what it seems to be.

Physicists have known crazy scientific facts for most of the last century, but most physicists arent interested in the theological and philosophical implications of them. Most dont seem very interested in spreading the word to non-scientists either, so most people in the world dont understand the craziness that takes place at the subatomic level (very small) or the astronomic level (very large).

And when you do bump into a physicist who is happy to share what she knows with you, you probably wont be able to understand her. Most physicists speak a language that normal people cant understand.

In this book, I will do my best to use easy-to-understand language and concepts to share some of the information that I learned in my lay persons study of modern physics and how it might relate to faith.

It is important to point out that the facts and theories in this book come from established physicists like Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, Stephen Hawking, and Brian Greene. These scientists are not prone to believe in fringe theories. The physicists I reference believe in things that can be consistently duplicated in controlled laboratory experiments. I did not include any fringe theories in this book, as I believe that these kinds of theories can be very dangerous to promote and explore.

The concepts I will cover dont prove anything about my faith system or yours. However, they do point to evidence that everything we believe in, whether physical, logical, or spiritual, is based at some level on faith.

What you will find in this book is the information that rocked my world and allowed me to take the leap of faith I needed to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior.

The Layout of This Book

This book is laid out in five chapters:

Chapter 1: What Is Faith?

Chapter 2: The Size of Things

Chapter 3: The Light of the World

Chapter 4: The Illusion of Physical Reality

Chapter 5: What It All Means

I have done my best to make this information easy to understand, but some concepts are inherently more complicated than others. Therefore, each section starts with relatively basic concepts that are easy to understand and progresses into the more complicated science, which might prove to be challenging for some.

I hope you find this deeper dive into faith and physics interesting and I pray that the Holy Spirit will use it for your good just as was done for me.
