I dedicate this book to the spirit of life,
as it has revealed itself to me
in the eyes of my children, the love of
my wife, and the healing of my patients.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
* * *
A work that has been in gestation for nearly two decades must, of necessity, reflect the contributions of more people than I can name here. All that have contributed their support and their stories will find themselves honored in my heart and on these pages. I would like to especially thank those who acted as personal catalysts for me: Angeles Arrien for helping me to evoke the passionate details of my own life story and make it visible to others; and Gabrielle Rico for her book, Writing the Natural Way, as well as for her conviction that the stories, quotes, research, and experiences here could actually coalesce into a complete manuscript. The mind-numbing chore of whittling down my reams of ideas into compact text fell to my editor and coconspirator, Hal Zina Bennett, who proved himself more than equal to the task of making my words user-friendly. Thanks, Hal.
While my nonstop schedule kept me busy in the treatment room, the recording studio, and the lecture hall, it was critical that someone be there to manage audiocassette production and distribution, the medical practice, and The Selective Awareness archives. This daunting task was met with devotion and honesty by a series of three truly great women: Alice McLerran, Ph.D., whose stellar Harvard Medical School faculty credentials nearly frightened me out of hiring her back in the 70s, although she proved to be a godsendconvincing me that simply creating a better mousetrap was not enough, that the mousetrap had to be packaged and marketed. Then came Ruth Lowy, who transferred her skills of running a family on a micro budget to running a business and practice on a similar oneand did so with style, dedication, and commitment. The legacy continues, even now, with Marilynne Isaacs, whose editorial and organizational skills, combined with her enthusiasm and charm, continue to support my deep healing workboth with the hundreds of patients I see, and with the millions who tune in via audiocassette or print. Thanks, guys.
Many thanks also to Sue Eldred, Lauren Bradbury, and Karen Schwartzkopf for their invaluable assistance in transcribing, protecting, and managing all the stories, case histories, and research findings as they were assembled through the years, and also to Rain Blockley, whose invisible weaving buoyed me up at a point when my spirits were lagging.
Also deeply appreciated are Darcy Lubbers for her unflagging support and assistance, both in teaching professionals, and in helping with the early edits of Deep Healing. Appreciated also are Juanita Brown and our Second Order Systems study group, with Roger Harrison, Sharon Jeffreys Lehrer, and Sandra Miller, for helping me refine and enrich my understanding of general systems, especially as they apply to the field of change in large organizations.
A tip of the hat to Karen Haas, Larry Steiner, and William Collinge, both for their input to Deep Healing and for their continued work sharing deep healing principles at the Cancer Support and Education Center in Menlo Park, California.
I also want to express my gratitude to Louise Hay, for knowing she wanted to publish this book; to Reid Tracy, for the support and freedom to do my thing; to Jill Kramer, for her patient shepherding of the project; to Christy Allison, for her exceptional design skills; and Kristina Queen for the wind under the wings.
To my teachers and colleagues, Richard Price, Virginia Satir, Milton Erickson, Peter Mutke, Mohandas Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Ram Dass, and Mits Aoki, let my willingness to pass your torch forward stand as my grateful tribute.
Most especially I want to express my gratitude to my wife, Sandra; my son Yuval; and my daughter, Aaron, for the enormous sacrifices they made without complaint (almost) over the three harrowing years during which my time and income were severely limited by the focus on this work. Thanks for hanging in there, guys; now we can play again. Thanks, too, to Emmett IV, for helping me learn what real-world success can come of a loving father-son relationship; and my mother, Harryette Barton, for her unflagging faith. Here it is, Mom!

THE DEEP HEALING
EXPERIENTIAL WORKOUT
PROGRAM
Throughout this book, you will find Experiential Workouts. These include checklists, relaxation exercises, mental visualizations, and affirmations that allow you to actually apply the mind-body principles in real ways in your own life. There are 12 Experiential Workout sessions in all. Some people may wish to do these as they are reading through this book for the first time, pausing in their reading to experience each workout before going on to the next chapter. Others may wish to skip the workouts in their first reading and go back and do them later as a continuing program. Either way, you will find that these workouts constitute a powerful training program in mind-body skills, which is invaluable for taking greater control of your health and improving your quality of life overall.
Many of the workouts require that you to either have somebody read instructions to you or that you make an audiocassette to follow. As an alternative to this, you might wish to purchase complete, professionally produced cassette tapes to guide you through this same material. These tapes are available from Source Cassettes, listed in the Resources section at the end of the book.
