Do you want to start practicing magic? Not sure where to begin?

Become a wiccan now!

Wicca is referred to by many as the Old Religion. Much of modern television and books draw inspiration from the Witch Trials of the 13th century, but in truth, the Wiccan religion is not really that old. Although it is believed that the rituals and practices were hidden from the Christian Church during the dark ages, in which the life of a Pagan would most certainly end in death, it was safe enough to surface in more modern times. This belief is what originally drew most to the religion and practices of Wicca.

To become a Wiccan, one must be able to put themselves in the boots of those before them. To truly understand the laws, beliefs and traditions that come with the life of a Wiccan, you must have the knowledge of all of its origins.
The most important thing in a Wiccans pursuit for a deeper connection and better understanding of Nature and all its divine mystery is the willingness to learn about the history behind that need.

The Wiccan Religion is truly the only one of its kind. It is magical in its own way as it allows each of its followers the freedom to seek out the natural magic of the earth and the magic within themselves in their own way.

W icca is referred to by many as the Old Religion.

In reality, Wicca is not an old religion at all. It first arrived in the United Kingdom in the mid-20th century around the 1940s or 1950s. Although, many of the things that influenced the religion are much older in comparison.

Wiccans believe that nature is superior to them and not the other way around. The Wiccan Religion is a very free one despite its secretive and traditional routes. Most who chose to join the religion are not forced to follow one set of beliefs or traditions but instead has the freedom to believe in whatever they want and follow whichever traditions they feel are right for them.

The Wiccan Religion is truly the only one of its kind. It is magical in its own way as it allows each of its followers the freedom to seek out the natural magic of the earth and the magic within themselves in their own way.

Gerald Gardner Father of Wicca

G erald Gardner was born in England in 1884; he was a civil servant, author, and occultist. He traveled a lot in his youth and was interested in many things including anthropology, folklore, spiritualism and other occult beliefs. He is responsible for the birth of the modern Wiccan religion. He was part of a Rosicrucian Order that he joined in 1939, where he met friends who were part of a secret inner circle. They revealed to Gardner the truth of a coven of witches which he was initiated into that year.

In the 1920s, there was a theory of an ancient pagan religion that was still being practiced in secret throughout Western Europe. Margaret Murray, an anthropologist, called the religion a Witch-cult. Gardner wanted to ensure the survival of the Witch-cult in the 20th century.

During the 1940s, Gardner founded a coven of his own and he named it Bricket Wood. He drew inspiration from a group he met called the New Forest group and when he created a new incarnation of the ancient Witch-cult, he borrowed much from their practices, including their elements of Freemasonry and their ceremonial magic.

Gardner was also responsible for the development of a major element in the Wicca practice: the worship of both a Goddess and a God. Both of which were equal to each other in every way.

The Wicca Religion although founded by Gerald Gardner was never called that by the man himself. He referred to the members of his coven as the Wica, an Old English term for sorcerers. However, he always referred to the tradition itself as Witchcraft or just the Craft. It only became known as Wicca after it spread to the United States.

Gerald Gardner is recognized as the father of modern Witchcraft but he didnt do it all by himself. His friends and colleagues were a part of it, as were other occultists. The inspiration that Gardner and other occultists were drawn from many older groups. Their knowledge, practices and rituals can be dated back to as early as the 13th century or the British occult revival in the 19th century. And of course those groups borrowed material from ancient civilizations before them.

So in modern times as we borrow our rituals and beliefs from our ancestors and their ancestors, it is an important part of the Wiccan religion that we remember its roots. For its roots within us is where the true magic comes from. The eternal, divine spirit that connects us to the earth and all its natural power has survived throughout the ages, no matter what stood in its path, to fulfil a divine purpose. Whether you believe it or not, for those who practice Wicca, or wish to practice Wicca, your experience will be based on how willing you are to lose yourself in the wonderful traditions of the Old Religion.

Wicca Traditions and its Many Different Forms:

Gardnerian Wicca

Gerald Gardner founded a coven which he called Bricket Wood, which is believed to have survived even today. This is an initiatory tradition, meaning that you can only be initiated into the group by another Gardnerian witch. This is so every Gardnerian can trace their lineage to the original Bricket Wood coven.

Gardnerian Wiccans work in covens that consist of 13 members. The coven is traditionally led by a High Priestess and a High Priest as second in command. This mirrors the story of the Sabbats, where the God dies and is reborn while the Goddess is eternal.
