Preface
I dedicated the first edition of The Power ofYour Identity to everyone stuck on the merry-go-round of life, looking for a way off and onto the road to happiness andsuccess.
Seeing people frustrated, overwhelmed, andliving their lives trying to avoid painwanting to stop the cycle, yet not knowing howwas a massive motivation for me to share thelessons I learned on the road from rock bottom to self-mademillionaire. I was once in that very same place!
In the early 1990s, I went through a verytough timemy father was sick with cancer, and I was going througha divorce. While taking time off to care for my dad, I lost my joband moved back in with my mother.
A wrongful-termination lawsuit and caringfor my ill father sucked away every penny in my savings account. Atperhaps the worst time of my life, I launched a career in realestate, something I knew nothing about. In the next year, I soldonly one home and made $4,000. I had hit my personal rockbottom.
They say when the student is ready, theteacher will appear and, thankfully, in my case, this was true. Ifound a mentor and began to turn my life around.
The first lessons my mentor shared with mebecame the basis for The Power of Your Identity, and theselessons remain relevant for anyone.
Raise your standards.
Change your limiting thoughts.
Model strategies of success.
My mentor taught me that knowledge andskills form the base of the pyramid of success but are not enoughon their own to guarantee success. We all know people who have alot of knowledge and even some excellent skills but who never seemto amount to anything. We also know plenty of people with no skillsand no specialized knowledge who seem to have it all.
In other words, knowledge is not power, andit alone will not lead you to success. Knowing the principles ofsuccess is not enough. You must take action in the rightdirection.
To be compelled to act, you need a clearvision. It may sound clich, but to make things happen, you mustgive life to your dreams again! Successful people maintain theirenthusiasm in spite of failures. You must cultivate a strongmindset and make resilience a habit. You must stop being content tosettle for the crumbs of life. You must go for it, holding onto theknowledge that going for it will be the happiest time of yourlife.
It is human nature to want to succeed.Thats why we all love to play a sport or play video games orcompete against someone better than us, not someone we can beatevery time; we want to push ourselves to the next level. Weinnately enjoy challenges and competition. We want to be the bestat whatever we do.
The ability to visualize what you want andbelieve it is possible is the first step to success. This can beharder than it sounds. Many people focus on what they dont wantand; therefore, get more of the same. Some people settle for lesswithout even realizing it.
Almost every day, someone says to me, I amdoing everything, have taken all the classes, and read all thebooks, but I am still struggling!
These people are like many others who trythe wrong strategies for years and become discouraged andunmotivated. They make excuses instead of changes. They dontaccept that success rests in thedetails. They refuse to see their excuses will get themnowhere.
The harsh truth is that you are notdoing all you can if you are not where you want to be inlife.

Massive changes have taken place in ourworld, our economy, and in the lives of many people since ThePower of Your Identity was first published. Working withthousands of people from all walks of life at seminars and trainingmeetings and in private coaching sessions, I have learned peopleare still struggling and afraid. They are still tired of beingdisappointed again, embarrassed again, or rejected again.
Many tell themselves a story, a story thatkeeps them stuck where they arecomfortably numb, not living, andjust surviving. They say, This isgood enough, or, Ill do it later.
Acceptance and complacency have become socommonplace that most people accept this state of being rather thanshooting for their personal best. They blame their lack of moneyand time and the state of the world around them for their lack ofsuccess, all the while avoiding change and the fear it brings.
Change is scary, but the alternative is to sneak to your death quietly andsafely.
This updated editionofThe Power of Your Identity offers a roadmap of the necessary shifts that must take place for any success tohappen in your life. Learning these lessons enabled me to becomeone of the most successful realtors in the world and start acompany dedicated to bringing success to others.
The Power of Your Identity willhelp you create a clear launchpad as you set personal goals thatwill lead to a compelling, exciting future. You will also learn howto change limiting thoughts and beliefs (the biggest obstacles tosuccess).
Have you heard the expression, If you arenot growing, you are dying.? It is attributed to many people. Why?Because it is true. Successful people are always growing andlearning from other successful people and from their mistakes. Theymodel their lives on the lives of others who already achieved aresult they desire. They learn from the best and most successfulpeople in their chosen fields. You bought this book, and thats agreat place to start!
Many people live in an unconscious state, unaware of the thoughts and beliefs running their lives, theirminds filled with uninspiring and discouraging opinions. You cannotlearn something your mind insists you already know or says wontwork for you. But if you do not open yourself to the possibilitythat your inner voice is steering you wrong, youll remainclosed-minded and shut off from any chance of success.
As you read, keep an open-minded attitude.Realize that, sometimes, the exercises you push against the mostwill turn out to hold the most significance and breakthroughs onyour road to success. Trust the process and stay the course.
Two things will affect your life more thananything elsewhat you read and listen to and the people you spendtime with. The most successful people learn from mentors, books, seminars, audio programs, and coaching. They infuse themselves withinspiration and motivation everywhere they go. They are constantlygrowing. Now, you are too.
You believe you can, or you believe youcant. Either way, you are right.
Henry Ford
It is vitally important to understand howyour belief systems, experiences, and people have affected yourlife. These effects happen at an unconscious level, so,unfortunately, most people do not pay any attention to or givecredence to their invisible powers. You hardly even notice them. Our beliefs are often unconscious and subtle, yet they run ourlives. And they will continue to do so until you figure out ifyours are disempowering or empowering you and you learn to changethem.
This book will help you through the processby showing you whats happening inside yourself, below the surface,so you can take action and start getting the results you want inall areas of your life. All change on the outside begins with innerchange.
Your identity and how you see yourself ismost strongly expressed by the expectations you feel others havefor you, your peer groups norms, and your board of directors(the people you see as most important in your life). These thoughtsand feelings are the most potent force in your personality becauseof your unconscious desire to remain consistent with the way otherssee you and the way you have always seen yourself.
