D EDICATION
My journey into the subject of UFOs that resulted in this book could not have been possible without the encouragement and loving companionship of my wife, Marilyn. There have been many times that I have wanted to extricate myself from further involvement in this complex subject, because I thought I had done and had enough. Marilyn has consistently encouraged and motivated me to continue to pursue the cause of disclosure of my story and the reality of this phenomenon. I am very grateful for that encouragement because it has given me a sense of greater understanding and acceptance of the phenomenon. I dedicate this book to her; to the conscientious investigators; and to the millions of people who have found themselves witnesses to the UFO phenomenon and who are still searching for answers.

F OREWORD
I read my first book about UFOs, The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects, way back in 1958, primarily because it was by an Air Force officer, Edward J. Ruppelt, who had been the head of the USAF Project Blue Book in the early 1950s. I had needed to order one more book from the mail order house to get free shipping, and it was a hardcover book marked down from $2.95 to only $1.00. It basically was free. I was a young nuclear physicist working for General Electric on the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion program and certainly at that time respected the USAF, which, with the Atomic Energy Commission, co-sponsored the program. As I have wended my long weary way to being a full-time ufologist, 56 years later, I have read a great many other UFO books. Frankly, many of them werent much good even if often they were sent to me for review. So it was, in contrast, a great pleasure to read Robert Salass Unidentified. I just wish he had written a longer book, because I found his approach fresh and sensible and based on serious study and an impressive background.
I have complained for many years that both believers and non-believers in alien visitations really dont know much about national security and how the government works. Robert Salas indeed knows about security. He also has a solid background as a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. Add to that his work at a high-tech, very highly classified location, a Minuteman Missile launch facility. Personnel at such facilities undergo psychological testing to assure that the staff near the missile launch button are sane. And he has spent much of the past 20 years researching flying saucers. He had a very intriguing UFO experience relating to the impossibly rapid shutdown of 10 Minuteman Missiles armed with nuclear warheads. There was a UFO over the front gate. Put it all together and we have a fascinating book. He had also demonstrated a great deal of courage in being willing to come forth to talk about the experience at Malmstrom AFB and also what seems to have been a strange but fascinating abduction experience. He has an excellent section on the U.S. government intelligence world, which works so hard to keep secrets from the public about UFOs and many other topics. Hard to imagine, but there are 16 different U.S. government intelligence agencies.
I share Roberts concerns about all the nuclear weapons sitting in the nine countries that have joined the nuclear club. Obviously, he is aware of the terrible destruction that would ensue if somebody started a nuclear war. He is also clearly aware of how little prepared the world is for such a catastrophe. He talks about some UFO cases with which I was not familiar. I was, as a nuclear guy, also intrigued by his comments about science fiction writer H.G. Wells, who used the term atomic bomb way back in 1914 in his book World Set Free. The neutron wasnt even discovered until 1932, and the first nuclear chain reaction not demonstrated until December 1942. And I always associated Wells primarily with the 1938 radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds starring Orson Welles. Farsighted he certainly was. So fasten your seat belt. You are in for a fascinating ride.

P REFACE
I feel obligated to write this book, partly because it is about an injustice. Like many of you, I have had my share of living with injustice. Like many of you, I have observed too much intolerance, greed, self-gratification, disrespect, violence, and hatred. You are my brothers and sisters; this is my planet; this is my country and my government; this is my life and I am going to try to do what I can to reveal the truth and help bring about more understanding and mutual respect, so that we can continue to evolve together to a higher plane of existence. Only then will we be ready to fully accept the reality of a universe that is teeming with precious life, as is our planet.
There are two things I know with certainty about the UFO phenomenon. One is that the phenomenon is real. That is, real objects of unearthly origin are visiting our airspace and our planet. My second certainty is that the phenomenon of people being abducted by sentient beings, who are operating these unknown craft, is also a reality. These conclusions do not come from hypotheses, guesses, theories, or concepts that I have used to convince myself of these realities. They come from my life experiences. They are facts that many of you reading this have not yet accepted in your own minds. I have had the benefit of that conscious knowledge gained from my experiences. I must admit, however, that these resolute conclusions did not happen overnight. Although I was well aware of the facts of my own UFO incident, it was a multi-year, multi-decade process to come to terms with these realities. For most of my life, I have thought of myself as a thoughtful and rational individual. I have achieved some academic success. I have an innate love of mathematics and an appreciation for the logical thinking process that mathematics helps us to develop. I did not arrive at these conclusions lightly or quickly. Ultimately, confronted with the entire body of knowledge from my own experiences and the experiences of others, I could come to no other conclusions.
