The Autobiography of Lady Rhea
Since I have such a long history of working and owning occult stores, many of my formulas make reference to different places where I was working at the time I created the oil. I did not want to list my oil formulas by year and where I was at the time. So the stories in this book are connected to many phases in my life. If you happen upon an oil recipe that states I was in Empress Botanica, I want you to know what I am talking about! So here is a brief history of my career in the magick business.
My journey began in the Bronx where I sit now writing this history. It was 1967, and I had just turned sixteen and was attending a beauty school to become a hair stylist. Meanwhile, I was very involved in the jewelry, clothes, and makeup that was all the rage at the time, which was making a drastic change in our society. Conservative post earrings, mohair suits, and pink sweaters were for the drab conservative good little Catholic girls. At least that is how I felt then. I wanted long earrings, peacock feathers to be exact, and beads, lots of beads, fringed vests, and miniskirts. My mother thought that everyone else in my generation and I had gone mad. Perhaps she was right, but we were mad for the right reasons. There was a small shop right near my school called the Bronx Village Shop. A woman named Miriam owned it. She was Puerto Rican and fifteen years my senior, but we became good friends. She soon allowed me to help out in the shop, and I got my first glimpse of Santeria and magick. In the back of her shop she had a storage loft. Upstairs on the platform of this loft, she had a large altar spread out on a rug with the saints and gods of Santeria. I was mesmerized by this and wanted to learn more. She taught me as much as she could. At one time, she sent me to shop at a botanica on Bathgate Avenue. It was called Original Products Botanica, and a few years later this shop would move to Webster Avenue and 189th Street, where they are still located today. My shop, Magickal Realms, is in this very building, upstairs from Original Products.
The first time I worked with oils was at the Warlock Shop on Henry Street in Brooklyn Heights, New York, in 1971 or 1972. The proprietors of that shop were Herman Slater and Ed Buczynski. Later on, in the late seventies, I went to work for Herman again at the Magickal Childe located on West 19th Street in New York City. This is where my wisdom and training with oils really blossomed. Herman had moved there in 1975, and it was just a large, open, raw space when he acquired it. I thought he was crazy and missed the coziness of the smaller shop. Undaunted, Herman utilized every inch of that space and built up a mega shop that quickly developed a reputation for being a one-stop magick shop. He eventually built a large oil office at the back of the shop, and this is where many of the formulas in this book were first born.
The Magickal Childe was my training ground under the guidance of Herman, Clinton Stephen, and Eddie. Many times throughout the recipe section of this book, you may notice me referring to a formula I created while we were working together. All three of these wonderful men are gone now, having moved on to the summerlands too young. I cherish their memories and am forever grateful for all theyve taught me. I feel that by sharing these oils with you, I am honoring their spirits, and in a way, helping them live on.
