FOREWORD
A romatherapy is a growing industry, and more and more people are becoming interested in learning about and using essential oils. As you may already know, essential oils are very concentrated plant substances. It is our job to learn what we can about them and use them in our homes and on our bodies with great care. One drop of an essential oil might come from thousands of pounds of flower petals, and it might take just one diluted drop to soothe your bug bite.
As a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist and aromatherapy blogger, I receive questions all the time from those who follow my blog. Most often, I hear from readers when they stumble across recipes in their online travels and wonder if theyre safe. I guess word has traveled that I am a bit of a safety geek. When you dont have a trusted, go-to resource, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to start.
Odds are that you know just a little bit about essential oils and youre eager to dive right in. Thats how I was when I first found out about EOs and all that they could offer. But you need to be careful which resources you choose. I bought several books geared to beginners when I started my aromatherapy journey. But after I received aromatherapy training, I realized they were full of unsafe information. I havent touched them since. By purchasing and using this book, youll avoid making the same mistake I did.
There are so many essential oils, and they can be useful for a variety of issues. Knowing when and how to use them is key to aromatherapy success.
Its natural to assume that because essential oils originate from plant sources they are without risk, but this is not always the case. There are safety issues to consider when you use them. If you have children in your home, there are essential oils youll want to avoid using around them. Pregnant women need to use caution, as there are some essential oils known to cause harm to a growing baby when misused. Some essential oils can elicit bad reactions if applied topically and the skin is exposed to the sun. All essential oils should be diluted before topical use, some require extra dilution, and it goes without saying that essential oils should never be used internally without guidance from a professional aromatherapist who has received training in aromatic medicine.
DIY Aromatherapy is a great place to start experimenting safely and affordably with essential oils. This book tells you about the history of aromatherapy, and then goes on to explain how essential oils are made, the ways in which they work, how to choose and use them, which supplies are useful, how to make your own blends at home and that is just what youll find in the first part! In the second part of the book, youll get to read profiles of dozens of essential oils to help you familiarize yourself with their properties, uses, precautionsand even their scents and costs. Following the profiles is what youre really waiting for, and its my favorite section, too. There youll find the recipes. Included are recipes for health and wellness, cosmetic applications, perfume blends, and recipes for use in the home.
