T he apostle Paul, speaking about the spiritual conflict believers in Christ constantly are engaged in, says these words in Ephesians 6:12: For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places ( nasb ). The highly secular world in which we live finds this kind of worldview rather outdated, inaccurate and challenging to the evolutionary progress supposedly taking place in this hour of human history.
Make no mistake, though. We are at war. Princes and powers are real, and they love nothing better than for us to deny their influence and remain ignorant of their significance. When carnal Christians say that Paul is not speaking of the demonic realm when he teaches on it in Ephesians 6, and that these are not spiritual entities he refers topersonalities with a will of their ownI want to ask them which Christ they are following. Those who follow the Christ of Calvary, the Christ of the gospels, will engage their archenemies by wrestling with them in their walk in the Spirit. The Greek word arche , translated in the verse above as rulers or principalities, refers to those entities that have the highest rank in hells government under their leader, Satan.
Having said these things, I want you to realize that you hold in your hands a very powerful book written by a dear friend, Steve Sampson, entitled Confronting Jezebel: Discerning and Defeating the Spirit of Control . Steve did not write this book simply because he saw something in Scripture that jumped off the page. Steve has endured seasons of warfare in the Spirit over the years that God has used to season him. He is a leader who can effectively equip the saints for the work they are called to do in both the local and universal Church. One area in which the Spirit has taught Steve how to wage effective warfare involves one of these arche principalitiesa ruler, if you will, that not only exists as a real entity in the invisible world, but that has existed throughout the long course of human history. This principality has sought to raise its ugly head against the move of Gods Spirit again and again. Dare I say it is one of the most powerful entities, one of the most powerful principalities, in the kingdom of darkness itself?
Jezebel is more than the name of a wicked queen who lived at a time of great spiritual decline in the history of Gods chosen people. Jezebel is also a spiritual threat to those leaders whose assignment has been to nullify this demonic principalitys power in the earth. The prophet Elijahs intense battle with this principality, this archenemy, is legendary. Elijah confronted Jezebelboth the human queen and the spiritual entityat the height of his spiritual development, destroying her organized system that ruled the minds and behaviors of the masses, lulling them into a drunken stupor, leaving them blinded to the truth and demands of the Only Wise God.
Jezebels footprint appears many times in Scripture, and many times in history. Steves treatise, now revised and updated, is a clear, clarion expos on how this demonic principality operates and how to neutralize its power both as individuals and as a company of believers. It all begins by becoming aware of Jezebels existence, intent and approach. From there, Steve has done a masterful job of providing keys for waging effective warfare against Jezebel. Do not expect those who have no interest in spiritual warfare to celebrate this demonic forces demise, though. They are so ignorant of their own entranced state of blindness, brought on by the power of this principality, that they cannot even recognize its effects. They need your prayersvigilant prayers, I might add.
