WHAT YOURE UP AGAINST

C HAPTER 1

S ATANS T ARGETS

Dan and his buddies from school spent many late nights tapped into an obscure world of Internet chat rooms, message boards, and portals. They were especially hooked on two sites: Letters to the Devil and Devil in Blighty. Sometimes theyd just hang out, listening to Radio Free Satan. In his room, above his computer, Dan had painted a white pentagram on a stereo speaker. He also started using the names Sid and Master Lucifer in chat rooms.

Dan and his friends gradually began experimenting with some satanic rituals, performing eerie ceremonies at midnight involving burning strands of their hair and fingernails. Dan started flunking out of school and, according to his teachers, developed a serious attention disorder.

Fourteen-year-old Kim had an unreasonable fear of fire and cone-shaped objects. She also struggled with night terrors of hideous robed creatures with braided hair sitting on the edge of her bed. But the worst thing of all was trying to ignore the voices in her head. They just kept bugging her with crazy and bizarre thoughts.

Nathan was sixteen when his friends gave him a copy of Anton LaVeys Satanic Bible , a book that spells out the doctrine of Satanism. Nathans mind was like a dry sponge, immediately soaking up what he was reading. Up to this point, hed been insecure and searching for something outside himself that would make him feel special. He liked the new attitude that the book gave him. Now he felt above people he used to be afraid to talk to. After all, he was a Satanist. The others believed only in God.

When Lisa was in junior high her adoptive parents kicked her out of the house. She lived on the streets for about a year and then decided to go to the West Coast to start a new life.

In Hollywood she met some people who invited her to a birthday party, where she was introduced to twenty-two-year-old Brad. That night Lisa learned that a spirit, claiming to be an old merchant seaman from five centuries ago, possessed him.

This spirit suddenly spoke directly to Lisa in a voice she thought sounded familiara voice she believed belonged to her father from a past life. Lisa believed that five hundred years ago, at the age of eleven, she had been brutally raped and murdered while her father was on one of his many voyages to a far-off land. This father was the merchant seaman now possessing Brad. She and her father never had a chance to say good-bye, so it was a great surprise for her to talk with him once again after all these centuries. And now whenever she wants to speak to her daddy, she just calls Brad, who enters a trance so she can talk to him.

Today, at age sixteen, Lisa is a Wiccan witch-in-training. After searching for truth and spiritual meaning for a long time, she thinks she may have finally found the answer.

Bob put his faith and trust in Jesus at an early age and was very involved in his church youth group. He went to every Sunday morning and Wednesday night service, summer and winter camps, plus most other youth activities.

But Bob was bored. He was bored with school, church, and life in general. He started playing Dungeons & Dragons online, but he quickly became bored with the standard game. So he came up with his own version. Bob began developing a hunger for evil and violence, but he couldnt get enough online or from television, movies, or the DVDs he rented. He hungered for morethe more violent, the better. His appetite was so intense that he started reading books just because he could make the pictures so much more violent and colorful in his imagination.

Bobs cousin invited him to a party, where he smoked up for the first time. He was hooked and started going every weekend. Bob gradually progressed from marijuana to crack cocaine.

One weekend, an older college student whod been hanging around the parties invited Bob to a special party. Bob hesitated at first, but finally agreed to go. The party took place outside the city limits in the basement of a large house deep in the middle of an orchard.

Bob had never experienced such a party. Every kind of booze and illegal drug imaginable was thereand free. Bob immediately involved himself in every part of the partyincluding the special activities in a room painted with a red goats head on the wall and a pentagram in the middle of the floor. Chanting strange-sounding songs, speaking with an evil spirit, and seeing nearly immediate results gave Bob access to an evil power hed not experienced before.

Bob began making a weekly journey to the isolated house for the special party. The pattern of the party was always the same. This continued for several months, and Bob began to sense the presence of a new power in his life. But this power scared him.
