What is the essence of human beings?

Is our essence entirely constituted by the chemical elements and bioelectrical processes that make up our physical bodies? Or is our essence an invisible, spiritual spark or soul that pertains to a nonphysical, higher state of reality?

Mary Terhune is a living example of someone who initially subscribed to the first, physicalist worldview. Yet due to extraordinary, alternate states of consciousness that came upon her unbidden, she woke up to the second, spiritual worldview. This book is her gripping, first-person account of life-transforming experiences of spiritual enlightenment. Marys work is a fascinating, clearly written spiritual handbook for people wholike herself, and like mehave a restless, unquenchable analytic mind.

In the historical past, mystics and visionaries were regarded as exceedingly rare or even unique individuals who were somehow set apart from the rest of humanity. Visionaries were assumed to have some special, direct point of contact with the divine that was missing among their fellow human beings. Modern research with people who had near-death experiences or spontaneous episodes of mystical consciousness, however, has shown the direct opposite. Apparently, the propensity to elevated, ecstatic states of awarenesssometimes referred to as cosmic consciousnessis an intrinsic property of our human nature. And it seems to me that the implications of that fact are exceedingly profound.

Now, of course, each individual human person is extraordinary, and Mary is no exception. As you will see in reading this book, she has a very inquisitive mind. Mary worked for 16 years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the most amazing and respected institutions of higher learning on this planet, as an administrative assistant managing the office and organizing international conferences for the Center for Theoretical Geo/Cosmo Plasma Physics, meeting the top 200 space plasma physicists in the world.
